Summary
Beatrice is standing stiffly across the room. She rolls her shoulders, rolls her head on her neck, stares down at her hands. An unfamiliar smile slides across her face-- and Ava knows all of Beatrice’s smiles now, knows the polite nun smile and the customer service smile from the bar and the friendly smile for Hans and the small genuine one for Camila and the careful genuine one for when Ava makes her laugh and the less careful open one when Ava surprises her with coffee on the rare days she wakes up first-- and Ava’s stomach twists.

Summary
Ava dies, and Beatrice wakes up. Her heart pounds heavily in her chest. Her eyes sting with unshed tears. Her hands still feel as if they are coated with Ava’s blood. It was a dream. She feels an aching relief wash over her, flooding her body from the top of her head to the tips of her toes.
Ava dies, and Beatrice wakes up. Her stomach churns. Her head spins. It was… a dream? A nightmare. The same one, twice, in the same night.
Ava dies, and Beatrice wakes up. Her blood runs cold. Her muscles tense up so tightly that they ache as the realization fully settles in.
It’s not a dream.

Summary
It happens in a second.
Ava's plan for escaping the tarask at the Church was perfect, until it wasn't. Until Beatrice was torn from her arms, and left at the mercy of the creature.
By the time Ava gets to her, Beatrice might have more than a few scars.
With the threat of Adriel and his demons looming over them, Ava and Beatrice barely have time to process the aftermath of the tarask attack. Constant pain, injuries that refuse to heal, nightmares and visions that make Beatrice question the reality around her and inside her own brain ... and on top of it all, a mysterious voice that keeps telling her there's no way to win this war, but to turn on her family and the person she loves the most.
