    Summary

A couple of minutes later, he feels Stiles begin to stir and press closer. Apparently, the living heater in the form of Derek suited him just fine. The boy turns onto his side, fully hugging him like a toy now, and buries his fingers into the fur at the scruff of his neck. Derek feels him press his forehead against the top of his head. He goes still, listening as Stiles’s pulse beneath his head begins to even out, becoming steady and strong. The sticky scent of exhaustion gradually gives way to the fragrance of peaceful sleep

    Summary

There’s a tree there, he knows, one larger and more important than anyone understands. He’s seen it in his dreams; walked around its massive trunk and pressed his hands into its bark. It’s not the tree of life, but it holds something just as precious. It feeds the forest and the earth, and it keeps the balance. It whispers to him in his dreams and now it calls to him while he’s awake because it’s time.

Stiles isn’t sure for what, but the tree needs him. It’s waiting there, ready to show him his destiny. There’s a rustling behind him, the sound of wolves crashing through brush, but he can see the tree now. The Nemeton. Standing potent and resilient, it’s branches climbing higher than Stiles can see and it’s roots so deep and strong they exist in another universe.

He knows now what waits for him here, what the tree has to offer him. It’s the man. The one he knows so well in his mind. The dark-haired one with shining blue eyes and pointed ears and teeth. A werewolf. The werewolf.

“Well,” Stiles says, “that continues to be offensive. I mean. I understood it was a little weird to be married when I was a teenager but I’m twenty now. A full-fledged adult. Like. Mature, and shit.”

    Derek laughs.

“I’m serious! We have a mortgage. We do our taxes.”

“I do our taxes,” Derek says.

“We do couples yoga and monitor our fiber intake.”

“I don’t monitor my fiber intake.”

“That’s because you’re a werewolf and your colon can just regrow itself or whatever when you treat it badly. I have a human colon, Derek. It has human colon needs.”

“Please stop talking about your colon.”

“We have received confirmation that there is a hostage situation in progress at a warehouse compound two hours out of Los Angeles, following a multiple-vehicle pileup on Highway 101 this morning...”

The one in which Stiles has lived to (legal) adulthood and, along the way, become a bit of a badass himself.

The staggering of scenes along multiple timelines simultaneously is a challenging technique. Not a flawless execution, but a solid performance all the same. Love it.

"I have… well… she said that she thinks that I maybe have… PTSD?”

The line goes so dead that Derek almost thinks Stiles hung up on him. He waits eight very quiet seconds, and says softly, “Stiles?”

“I’m sorry, what?” Stiles says, breath whooshing back over the phone line.

“I have PTSD,” Derek says more firmly. It’s the first time he’s said it out loud, not as a question. It hasn’t really seemed real, until now. He’d spent the whole of his last session arguing that Tamara was wrong about him, and saying it out loud is like admitting it’s true. “Post-traumatic stress dis—”

“I know what it means,” Stiles interrupts, “I just didn’t think I’d heard right. Oh my God.”
