Summary
Belladonna shines like the sun down in the darkness of the Neath. There is a brightness to them that you never thought you’d get to see again and part of it reminds you of the person you were on the Surface. Even the yellow they wear is similar to what your favourite colour once was and you find yourself drawn to them like a moth to a flame.
You trust them with your death. You trust them with your life. And, eventually, you trust them with your name.

Summary
Their hands are cold. That’s the first thing you notice. Belladonna’s hands have never been cold before, after all.
You notice the blood second. It spreads out from their body alarmingly fast and you cannot avoid it staining your clothes.
And then they speak. Their voice is nothing more than a rasping whisper, so different from the soft, gentle sound you are used to hearing.

Kiel laughs mirthlessly, though his eyes soften at your last words.
“You and Belladonna have done more for me than the Surface ever has,” he says, meeting your gaze. “I wish I could say I regret my recklessness, my anger, and my grief, but I only regret the pain I’ve caused in my absence.”
You think, perhaps, that you felt much the same, at first. You open your mouth to speak but he is not yet done.
“Be careful with yourself, dearest friend,” he says warningly. “I find myself becoming more reckless in the wake of your death. Deaths, I suppose. And while it’s grief I am prepared to handle, there is no guarantee I’ll handle it well.”
The words sting but they are deserved. After all, have you not just witnessed the consequences of your own grief? It seems that the heartbreak of the Neath is unavoidable.

“Kiel?” she called hoarsely and winced as her voice echoed loudly, startling her roommate. He jumped up and whirled around to face her and she almost looked away; his face was more horrified than she’d ever wanted to see.
He held a locket in his hands that she recognized as her own, though there were a few changes that could only be attributed to the dream. Tears stained his cheeks and his eyes were red even as they widened with hope and realization. He reached up with one hand to scrub away the remaining tears and Cassia realized with horror that they were stained with blood that she could only assume to be that of her dreamed self.
