Summary
With a little mock salute you give a warm, “Sir, yes sir.” Something flashes in his eyes for a moment, and his hand slips from your hair. He clears his throat, gaze darting from yours.
“You… don’t have to call me that.” He rebuffs tentatively, and it piques your curiosity. You were usually careful about teasing him, knowing how sensitive his anxiety caused him to be. But you daringly pressed him a little, raising a brow at his seeming discomfort.
“And why not… sir?” You lean in a little, and despite your massive disadvantage in stature he shrinks back a little. He can’t seem to meet your eyes, clearing his throat.
You’d never seen him like this. There was social discomfort, where he fidgeted and hunched in on himself and made a quick getaway at the most available opportunity. This wasn’t anxiety, it seemed… Different. He seemed like he was torn between dashing away and getting closer to you. His breath had quickened, his pupils were dilated.
It hit you, he liked when you called him sir.
Like, a lot.

Summary
The monotony was safe, it was pacifying– after the life you’d lived before, varied and chaotic, you needed to be bored. You needed repetition. The occasional visitor, the occasional new face in the provincial town was enough thrill for you. You couldn’t stop the slight jitter in your motion when a dry laugh escaped from your throat. You shook your head, pressing your lips together in an exasperated smile. Yes you were better suited to as little excitement as possible.
And then the door slammed open.

Summary
As if her musings conjured the brown haired wizard, Thea nearly collided with him on the path to the shops. He had come out of one of the tailor shops with a package under his arm, his dark brown linen coat being tugged on and his focus being elsewhere. He dropped the package to catch Thea’s arms and then dropped them with a curse.
“Zurgan,” he hissed a bit as bent down to grasp and inspect his package. “You might be more mindful of your surroundings, Anthea, lest you walk right off of a pier.”
Thea wrapped her arms around her middle and discreetly touched the place on her right arm where Rolan had grasped her for a moment. Then she lowered her hands to her sides before she shot a smirk at him.
“One could say the same of you, Rolan, what with your preoccupation with your precious package. Plus we aren’t near enough to the water for me to walk off a pier.”
Rolan grumbled with a roll of his eyes, the yellow hellish eyes flicking a bit towards the sky as if asking the Gods for patience. Still, even though it was obvious he was annoyed with her, he gestured for her to go ahead of him as they headed past the shop. His hand smoothing down his expertly coiffed hair as he waited.

Summary
Figuring out who you are, apart from the weight of everyone’s assumptions, your past as an ex B-list celebrity hero, and your estranged dysfunctional family is hard, if not impossible as is.
Add in trust issues and a gaping loneliness that only seems to grow day by day, and now you’re pretty much just going through the motions of a life you'd once hoped was your ticket to happiness.
Still, though, if it’s any consolation, the cute neighborhood guy you have a thing for also just so happens to be the new hire at work… And he might understand where you’re coming from a little too well.

Summary
Jauffre could stomp around and believe the Hero of Kvatch to be a blight on society, an unfortunate stain in the pages of what would fill the next volume of "The History of the Empire." But Lexa knew this wasn’t her fault. She had tried to remain pious, despite her ever growing admiration of her emperor, of her friend.
It was his soft-spoken holiness who had dangled the low hanging fruit to her dry and desperate throat.
