Summary
The girl with the lyrical, foreign name, Mai-rin-en, sniffs – a tiny, pathetic sound, the first she’d made. Her head lifts, just enough to raise her swollen, bloodshot eyes to his father, and for the first time, Nezha can make out a sign of life within the broken girl.
Her large eyes shine with emotion like a polished obsidian stone. “I want to go home.”
The loneliness of this girl is incomprehensible to six-year-old Nezha.
But when he looks at Mai’rinnen, he feels like he’s drowning alongside her.

Six-year-old Mai'rinnen is the only survivor of her peoples' genocide, half a decade later than it should have happened. She finds herself dragged away to a strange land, to be raised amongst cold foreigners until she can be useful to them, struggling to handle the grief and horror she experienced at such a young age.
She grows up. The cruel, hard world continues to drench her in its freezing waters.
It is only the kindness of another hurting, precious soul, that helps her find her warmth again.
