To chase after something he had long convinced himself was out of reach. Maybe, once Ray realized that Giulio had brought a piece of Irish apple cake, that he reeked of alcohol, that he was cold and wet, sitting on the stairs like a stray dog, pity would take over. Maybe Ray would invite him inside.
