“Is this how you feel too?” Jessie asks, pulling one leg beneath her. “Is this why you keep doing it? The fear? The… aliveness?”
Lee nods slowly, leans forward to stretch out her lower back as she bends over the tops of her thighs. “You don’t get used to it but it helps you keep going.” She twists at the waist, tries to work a knot out at the base of her spine and considers the wisdom of speaking again. In the dark like this, with Jessie so near and the war right outside the flap of the tent, she thinks there’s no time like the present and so she continues as she straightens. “There was a time, really early on, when I thought maybe I was immune to it. It just didn’t sink in. Not until…” She fades off. She can’t bring herself to talk about it, even now, even after everything else she’s seen. “Anyway, maybe it’s fucked but I think this is the only thing keeping me going anymore.”
In the dark, Jessie’s hand finds hers. It’s small and delicate and not calloused, not like Lee’s. “I think I know what you mean.”
Lee laughs. She can’t help it. It’s more a quiet huff of air than anything. “Yeah. Yeah, maybe you do.”
