Something clicked around Miles’ wrist fast enough to be a blur. When he tried to yank his arm away, it stopped short and shook the desk.
One end of a pair of handcuffs caught his wrist, connecting it by a short chain to the other cuff. Phoenix’s hand closed around it, squeezing it closed around the leg of the desk. His face clouded over, that mischievous grin taking a dark turn. “Gumshoe also showed me how to work his cuffs.”
AU where Phoenix is a little shithead teenage delinquent, Miles is the district attorney, and Gumshoe is an idiot.

Summary
Knives spent his last moments on Noman's Land with no regrets. Sure, he regretted some of the methods he used in his attempt to eradicate the human race and to convince Vash face the truth, but he didn't regret what he did. Using the last of his powers to gift an apple tree, Knives was ready for the calming embrace of death. What he wasn't ready for, however, was being abruptly woken up by Vash 150 years ago on SEEDS ship number 5. On the very day he crashed the ships.
Knives is given another chance relive his final day with Vash and Rem aboard the spaceship. He plans to not make the same mistakes in this life as he did the second. He knows exactly how this day will begin and how it will end, but what he doesn't account for is another presence on the ship with them.

He’s happy to have her here, always happy to have her here, especially nowadays when her winter breaks from college are never enough to sate Phoenix from missing her, but she knows that this is a sacred moment that can be shared only in coexistence. It is not made for people to speak with one another. It is only made for a person to speak with themselves.
And every year, when the clock strikes midnight, Phoenix imagines speaking to himself, every version of himself.
