“I’m glad you’re here.” It slips out of him, small and honest and trembling at the edges. Ilya doesn’t tease him, doesn’t deflect. He just steps closer, slow like he’s approaching something fragile, and crouches in front of Shane’s chair so they’re eye level.
“Me too,” he says, voice low and steady in a way it absolutely is not inside him. Then his mouth twitches and he reaches out to take Shane’s hand. “But also like. . . terrifying, yes?”
Shane lets out a breath that’s half laugh, half sob. “Yes. Very yes.”

Jackie sits back in her seat, taking a sip of coffee as she considers her husband’s proposal.
It wasn’t a terrible idea. It’d involve lying to all the other WAGs, but Jackie wasn’t too bothered by that. If Shane ever decided to come out, they would either understand or they wouldn’t—a line that would probably pretty closely mirror those who would be okay with Shane being gay and those who wouldn’t. And those who wouldn’t—well, fuck them anyway.
“That does sound like it might be nice,” Jackie finally says, smiling when Hayden immediately sits up straighter at her approving words.
“Yeah?” Hayden checks anyways.
“Yeah,” Jackie says.
Or, despite his refusal to let her add him to the WAG group chat, Jackie manages to quickly befriend Shane’s boyfriend. It takes longer for her to understand exactly what that means.

Hayden keeps mindlessly scrolling Instagram—a pantomime of paying attention, not really taking in anything that’s passing across his screen. Mind racing as a series of realizations wash over him.
Christ, no wonder Shane was so cagey about Lily. No wonder he didn’t want to introduce her to the guys.
Hayden would like to believe that everyone would be chill with it, but he could think of at least five guys off the top of his head that would a hundred percent take issue with Shane dating a trans woman. He can imagine, far too easily, the kind of slurs that would get thrown around the locker room if anyone ever found out. Towards Lily, sure, but towards Shane too—because Shane had to be gay, if his girlfriend had a dick, right?
Or, Hayden finds out something that he was never supposed to, and decides that the only thing he can do is show his best friend that he can be the best ally ever, if he just gives him the chance.Series
