For what it was worth, Ilya did school his expression into something less slack-jawed in record timing- his eyes flicking toward him and then back at the, well, crime scene before them both with calculative neutrality.

“It’s a dead body.”

“Obviously I killed him.” Shane spoke.
“Obviously.” Ilya echoed, his voice a ghost of a whisper. He was staring at the corpse with a quiet bewilderment that Shane would have found amusing in literally any other circumstance.
“...I don’t really know what to do now.” Shane admitted quietly.
Ilya was silent for a long, terrifying moment. “And you thought I would?”
“Well…”
“Well, what, Hollander?”
“You knocked.”In which, Shane Hollander kills a man (in self defense) and is far more concerned about crossing a line with Ilya than the dead body in his hallway.

Suddenly, the whole world stopped. It felt like all the oxygen in the room had been sucked right out, Shane’s whole body went stiff, all the color drained from his face.
“Ilya sent you?” His dad said tentatively, sensing the rising tension.
Shane could feel the panic rising in his chest. It felt like his lungs were filling with water. The panic attack that everyone expected from the outing was now hitting, and not because he was outted, but because Ilya was. Because Ilya was outted, in Russia. Shane tried to control his breathing, squeezing his eyes shut, digging his fingernails into his palms.
“Shane, what about Ilya?” Yuna tried again, her voice calm. Steady.
“Ilya’s in Russia,” Shane croaked out, tears filling his eyes. By the time Shane opened his eyes, he could see that the color drained in the three of their faces as well.

Hayden had known Shane was gay for a while now.
He didn’t want his best friend to live in a world where it felt dangerous to be his true self. He didn’t want anyone to have to live that way. So lately he had been extra sensitive to the homophobia that was rampant in the NHL. He started calling out his teammates who made homophobic comments. He had already gotten in several fights on the ice over the issue. After being so passive on the issue for so long, he wasn’t holding back any longer.
So he certainly didn’t hold back when he heard Shane’s rival, Ilya fucking Rozanov, being homophobic toward Shane.
OR: Hayden is just trying to be a good ally. He accidentally commits a hate crime instead. Oops.
