It starts off as a joke about having to pick his kid up from school. It's not long before everyone from the interns, to the Avengers, and even aunt May start to take it seriously. It's plain for everyone to see that Peter is Tony's son.

"Oookay," Tony drawls, sliding the robotic limb away. He shifts to appraise the boy with the full intensity of his attention. "What's up?"
"Nothing," Peter assures hurriedly, his fingers curling around the glowing phone screen. "It's nothing, Mister Stark."
Which is obviously bullshit, considering the kid's voice sounds small and far away, and his inner wattage has dimmed by about a hundred percent.

“Don’t start running,” Bucky says, holding his hands up like he’s trying to appear non-threatening, “you know Stark has alarms set up for every time your heart rate goes above normal—”
“That’s not true,” Peter says, even though he firmly recalls that time he got frustrated during homework and accidentally shut the facility down.
“It’s absolutely true,” Sam says, and he snatches the folder out of Peter’s hands.
Peter sighs. “Come on, guys,” he says, trying to snatch it back, and he thinks about trying to web them, because he does have a webshooter on, but that would make this whole thing a lot more dramatic than it needs to be. “It’s not like he’s gonna—have promotions or—fire people or anything—”

“You’ll come to learn that there’s only one thing worse than having nothing.”
Trying to hold onto his fight, Peter shoots back, “Yeah? And what’s that?”
“To have nothing, after being able to believe you could have everything.”
The streets are dirty, crowded, and the jagged bumps in the asphalt are hardly comfortable to sleep on. They’re home, though.
Peter is just about finished with New York City. It’s gotten impossibly harder to find even a scrap of food, and what little belongings he does have are unlikely to keep him alive through the winter. And the memories. God, the painful memories here.
So he saves up. Makes a plan to get out of there.
Then, somehow, he accidentally saves Tony fucking Stark from a gang of eight mercenaries, and the majestic plan disintegrates into ash.
The worst part about it, he knows, isn’t even that he met Tony. It’s that Tony met him.
