“That’s a mood ring.” When Kevin looked back up at Carlos, there was something a little triumphant but mostly apologetic in his gaze. “And do you know what that color means?”
“Happy?” Kevin tried.
“No, Kevin. It doesn’t mean happy.”
“What does it mean?”
“It means-” Carlos faltered. He blinked once, twice, and then looked away, rubbing the back of his neck. “Well, something not good. Cecil never told me the exact meaning, which probably means it’s really bad.”
“Cecil gave this to you?”
“Technically? He has two, so he lets me wear the moon and he wears the sun.”
“Cute,” Kevin smiled.
“Oh, shut up.” Carlos rolled his eyes, but he was smiling as well. “I am not the best at reading people, and you are absurdly good at smiling even in situations where you definitely shouldn’t be, so this will help us both. You can relearn what you’re actually feeling and put a name to it, and I can keep an eye on it and make sure I’m not accidentally pushing you too far like I did today.”
