Sometimes they steal kisses beneath blankets in dim fox-holes, but more often they sneak into the forest, go on long walks until the other men start making jokes about Babe turning into Dike. The few who even think twice about it assume Babe has some kind of embarrassing medical problem he wants to discuss at length with the medic, the irony of which isn’t lost on Babe. He knows some people would consider him sick in the head, but he looks at Gene and the way his tired eyes gleam when they’re together and he wonders how anyone could ever call what they have a sickness.

Summary
Heffron’s gaze is fixed on the bracelet, smile softer than Eugene’s ever seen it.
“The other guys don’t get it, of course. Most of ‘em, anyway. If it ain’t the fact about me bringing it on the road with us, it’s ‘cause they think it’s stupid of me to think I’d ever find who I’m looking for on the line. Should’ve given it to a girl in Aldbourne, or even Eindhoven at the latest, they tell me, ain’t no one to court after that. Ha! I’ll show ‘em.”
Eugene hums. He can’t say that he understands Heffron’s line of thinking either, can’t comprehend the other’s confidence that what he’s set on will really come to fruition, but he never had to anyway. It’s not for me to understand, he thinks, willing himself to resist the hope that threatens to take shape in a small crevice at the back of his mind.
“It’s beautiful, Heffron,” he says, and whether he’s talking about the courting bracelet around the other’s wrist, or the steadfast optimism in the Alpha’s heart, he’s not sure.
Heffron looks up, and their eyes lock.
“Sure is, huh?” Heffron whispers, like it’s a secret just between the two of them.

Summary
Ryan is a soldier during the Vietnam war who got honorably discharged due to a severe injury during his service. when he returns home he has no money to his name, no home to return to, nothing. He meets with Brendon, who is extremely anti-war and is a hippie through and through. After the interview Brendon feels sympathy for Ryan, who was just trying to make some money for his family, and offers him a job at the Radio station he hosts.
