Mello shook his head. “I just don’t get why. If I were you, I’d want me dead.”
There were so many reasons Near could have given. That Mello was brilliant and dedicated and passionate and fierce. That Mello was one of a kind, irreplaceable. That if Mello died, a void would open up in Near’s heart, one that could never be filled by another mortal soul; one that would slowly, surely kill him.
Instead, he kept his response simple.
“You told me you would be waiting for me at our destination,” he said. “It was only fair that you should live up to that promise.”

Mello falters, setting down his mug of hot chocolate in favor of focusing on Near’s sudden desire for conversation. “Uh-huh. You make like one million dollars a month, Near. I’m sure you’re fine.”
Near shakes his head. “No. I am irresponsible with my income.”
Mello sighs. “Yeah, well it’s not like you’re in debt. Your bills are clearly getting paid.”
“And yet I still feel irresponsible."

Summary
The door has only just shut behind them when Mello slams him against it, forcing the air from Near’s lungs in a painful wheeze. Hands fisted in white fabric, he gets right up in Near’s face. It is meant to be frightening, menacing, but more than anything Near finds it nostalgic, really.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Mello hisses.
Near blinks, feigning innocence. “Visiting.”

Summary
“I’ve never tried something like that,” Near says when Mello makes the suggestion. “I’m not sure whether I would enjoy it or not.”
If this were anyone else, Mello would write this claim off as a weird, bad lie, but for Near, this is perfectly plausible; in fact, his suspicion that it might be the case was part of what motivated him to bring it up. Introducing Near to new experiences is one of the more entertaining aspects of this job outside of the actual casework, and he spends more time than he’d care to admit thinking up different things Near might not have done before.
“You won’t know what you’re missing if you don’t give it a chance,” Mello says, stretching his legs out in front of him as he leans back against the desk. “You might really like it.”

Mello taps his fingers on the side of his cup, impatient. “Yeah. It doesn’t have to be big, just— something good that’s happened since— since.”
This Mello is new and strange to him, unnerving. Near had not heard from or seen him since the end of the investigation, and then, last week, he emailed out of the blue and told Near to meet him in a diner in rural Pennsylvania at five in the morning on a Wednesday, and now he is demanding that Near tell him something good.

Summary
The brownies were not very good. There was an odd pungent undertone to them that neither Light or Matsuda could identify — despite being total narcs, or perhaps because of this fact, they were not familiar with the signature taste of marijuana in edibles.
Matsuda made them coffee and breakfast, and they got to work, the brownies quickly forgotten. Because they were full from the stodgy brownies, they only ate a bit of yogurt for breakfast. This was a grave error.
While working on the Kira case, Light and Matsuda accidentally get very high. They do not cope well with this.
