Hermione shot him an uncertain look. "Oh, I couldn't do that, Harry. I don't want to cause any issues between you and Ron."
Harry waved a hand dismissively at her reluctance. "I would do the same for Ron, if he'd been the one to leave. You didn't do anything wrong, Hermione. I know you tried…probably for longer than you should have. And I know what it's like to be alone in life. We might not have families like everyone else, but we have each other."

“Yes. I think it matters.” James is shocked at how soft his own voice is, but even more so at the pause in her footsteps. They’re quiet for a second, and then he hears them approaching.
“Why?” She asks, slowly, slowly walking back towards him, rejoining him at the wall. “Two more years at this place and nobody will care how many O.W.L.s we got last year or who was a prefect or Quidditch captain. Voldemort won’t care. This,” she gestures at the air around her, “won’t mean anything when we leave here.”
“But it means something now, doesn’t it?”

The war’s over but the stillness left behind doesn't feel like peace, it feels only like silence. When Hermione’s flat is attacked, he finds himself with company again; her voice in his house, her tea on his counter, her presence steady in the nights that feel too large. Harry can't help but wonder if this, too, will end, as all else seem to.

Summary
In Slytherin, Harry can become someone powerful and respected. It’s hard to make friends, especially friends in a rival house, but exchanging flying lessons for tutoring is a good excuse. No one needs to know the truth, that Harry’s interest in Gryffindor Hermione Granger starts because of an obsession with her hair and curiosity over her confidence with snakes. Harry makes some mistakes along the way, struggles with pride, and learns that whoever said friendship was easy was almost certainly lying. Once he figures out that easy is irrelevant, he starts taking steps to make sure everyone gets what they deserve.
