She frowned. “Remember the deal, Carm? We talked about this.”
This could mean a million things, Sydney acknowledged. It could mean the weekly standing lunches and dinners they’d agreed to, trying out the different spots in the city they thought might bring inspiration. It could mean him picking up all of Nat’s calls, so long as she picked up all of her dad’s. It could mean, even, Syd making him an iced Americano with her fancy espresso machine every time he drove her to work.
But as Carmy’s eyes went half-lidded, she knew she wasn’t misunderstood. Her words rang a bell to the most important agreement they’d decided on, months ago. One that had kept them more than afloat.
The meaner you are out there, the meaner I’ll be to you here.

“Don’t go,” Ilya manages to choke out, burying his face under Shane’s chin and squeezing his eyes shut. He inhales sharply, pressing his nose deeper into Shane’s throat to breathe in his scent. Right now, it’s Ilya’s body soap, vanilla and spice, masked under salt and skin. He inhales it like it's his own personal supply of air, what he needs to extinguish the burning in his lungs.
“Ilya,” Shane says, voice urgent, “you’re shaking, I—your breathing’s too fast—” He tries to pull back, needs to see Ilya’s face, needs to see what’s wrong, but Ilya just shakes his head and clings tighter.
“Please don’t go, Shane,” Ilya whispers, pleading. I’m sorry, please don’t go, don’t go—
OR: ilya and shane accidentally recreate the tuna-melt day, and ilya realizes just how much old wounds hurt.

Ilya does mind. Hearing it said back to him, almost makes him flinch, a sudden and brittle sound right next to his ear that he fails to recoil from in time. But he swallows back the bitter truth and replies, “Of course not. If that is what you want.”
He waits, sitting on his living room couch, phone pressed painfully against his ear, his other hand gripping his knees till his knuckles blanched. He could feel his own heart rattling behind his ribs, pulse rockingloudly. His mind was an echo of alarm, demanding of him: Why isn't Shane saying anything?
It was the loudest silence he’s ever lived through, until Shane finally said, “Okay.”

Carmy ran warm. She saw him strip himself of his woolen jacket and brave Midwestern cold with bare arms and miraculously be without any goosebumps more times than she could count. He surely didn’t need the fuzzy packets of warmth, but he had them. Undoubtedly, he had them for her. Sydney would complain about her constant cold fingers and dry knuckles often, she shouldn’t have been surprised Carmy wasn’t just listening but cataloging the facts about her into some place in his brain. And yet—
It made her ache, to be thought of like that.
Or, when Carmy and Sydney finally start dating, everyone knows. Everyone, that is, except for Sydney.
