Summary
The frustrated ranting trails off, and in a slightly weaker, more hesitant voice, he asks, “…could you… project yourself? For a bit?”
“Wh-what?”
John doesn’t quite mean for it to come out that audibly startled, almost hurt, but he can’t quite manage to catch himself before it slips out. He just can’t understand the request, unless—is Arthur trying to kick him out of their body? Does he want space that desperately, that he—
“It’s, ah… well, you know how it drains me,” Arthur continues, probably oblivious to John’s thoughts. “I think I could… use that, right now. To—burn off some of this restless energy.”

Summary
When the King ripped John out of Arthur’s head, something was left behind. A connection, something that makes him tethered to the King’s will.
It’s torture for the both of them. For Arthur, a simple punishment for defying the King’s will for so long—and John, to wear him down, until surrender seems like a mercy.

Summary
Arthur’s recovery isn’t instant, when he stops projecting. It takes him a moment to collect himself. John feels it, too. The unfamiliar weakness in his borrowed limbs when he resettles into them. The drain on them both when their tether is stretched too thin.
But surely, once they separate fully, it’ll be different. Right?

“He has lost a great deal of blood. And lacks the means to replenish it. More time in this state will not restore him, it will diminish him further.”
“What means–?”
“Food,” comes Arthur’s voice, raspy and tired, making John jolt in surprise—he’d nearly forgotten he was still conscious. “And water.”

Summary
He can’t do this anymore. He doesn’t even know how to articulate what this is—but that does nothing to dampen the inescapable insistence, deep in his core, that he cannot put up with it for a moment longer. Whatever the price of freedom, he is ready to pay it.
So he barricades his door, and sits down against the wall, and does his best to brace himself.
Because here’s the thing: Hastur chose him for his music. Ergo, no more music—no more of Hastur’s attentions.
He takes his pinky between his teeth.

Summary
And that was how Arthur found himself running through the woods like a madman, sweat beading on his face and extremities freezing, intermittently tripping over obstacles invisible through the blanket of snow, in a futile attempt to escape a monster that was built for this environment. He doesn’t even know precisely what it is—John hasn’t been able to get a good look at the details, on account of, you know, the running—but the few close brushes they’ve had so far have been more than enough to impress upon him its size and its speed.

Summary
One of his feet finds the edge of the outcrop and the other one finds nothing but empty air. His stomach lurches with the dizziness of a missed step, his boots have nowhere near enough traction, and he slips—falls.
They hit another ledge on the way down, an impact that he feels all the way through his ribcage, knocking the wind out of him. Scrabbling sounds, a gentle pull at his shoulder, and he realizes John is trying to hold on. And so is he, reflexively, clinging with his right hand while his legs kick uselessly at the void beneath them.
It’s not enough. Old stone crumbles under their weight and once again they’re plummeting.
It is a dizzying few seconds of air rushing past them, and then they hit the ground with a snap that sends fireworks of pain through Arthur’s legs and all the way up his spine. He’s vaguely aware of screaming. Maybe his.
And then, blessedly, silence. -

Summary
Arthur’s heart flutters unevenly, arrhythmic. Vague sparking signals cannot make it past the broken connection of his severed spine. There is warmth in his core, still, but it is fading rapidly in the frigid air. The Dark World compels him to live, yes—but it does nothing more.
And like that, enveloped wholly in his blood and sinew once again, it occurs to him:
Maybe he can do something about this.
If he wants his friend back, he needs to do something about this.
He stretches his awareness outward once again, and begins to knit.
After dying at Kayne's hands, John and Arthur find themselves in the Dark World. Possessed of two separate bodies, though... perhaps not quite as separate, or as whole, as they were hoping.
Nothing's ever easy, is it?

Summary
Now with a body of his own, John finds himself dwelling on certain thoughts that he once avoided. In particular: the nature of the act of consuming. The mortal need for sustenance. Some of the things they’ve had to do to survive… and his own, newly-made corporeal form, that has gone so perfectly untouched by them all.
In the end, he comes to one very simple conclusion. He wants visible proof of everything he's survived, and he wants to give something back to his friend. There's one easy way for him to have both.

Summary
All those years ago, freshly orphaned and adrift with nothing but a voice in his head for company, Arthur couldn't have imagined surviving another decade—much less finding himself with a child to look after, and some semblance of a stable life to do it in. But here he is. He and John have made their peace, are closer than he would've thought possible. They've found something adjacent to stable work. And they have her—their perfect girl, their universe. Their Faroe.
It's closer to happiness than he ever thought he'd get. It's good.
He just needs to figure out how to keep it.

Summary
Reunited in the Dark World, but finding themselves with two separate bodies, John and Arthur realize that neither of them are enjoying the distance.
And, well. John’s body is physical, but it’s malleable enough that they can still make it work. It’s not going to be an elegant rejoining, per se—but anything’s worth it if they can be together again.

Summary
Moonlight filters through the curtained window, painting the room in shades of blue. It's a calm, quiet night. They’re safe, Arthur isn’t mortally wounded, there’s working tap water, there’s even a comfortable enough bed. John should be relaxed, right now, as much as he ever can relax. And he would be. It’s just…
It’s just, his fucking arm.
