There is a man knocking below on the kitchen door of her Chateau. When the glow of light from the opened window falls into the street, he looks up at her. She can’t make out his features through the rain and darkness, but the voice is familiar.
“…Marion?”
“Fjord? Is that you?”
He appears in her study with a thunderclap instead of answering.

Yanli feels the fear from her dream throbbing in her guts just above her weak and whirling core, all through the long hours of their silent flight over Yunmeng towards the Burial Mounds. Jiang Cheng’s cultivators stop sporadically for rests, and if Jiang Yanli lets her head hang down low as she catches her breath, and drinks deeply of the water when it’s passed around, and for a moment thinks of nothing but her exhaustion and dully of A-Xian, then at least no one calls attention to it when half of the newer disciples are doing the same.
Yiling is a shadier ridge on the horizon, growing steadily nearer. Growing up, she never realized how close to home the Burial Mounds were.
Jiang Yanli makes the other choice.

But cooperation breeds grudging appreciation (and even more grudging attraction). Each uncovered secret on this mystery world brings them closer to returning to endless war. Can they keep fighting as if nothing has changed? Or will they take the chance for something new?
