Summary
Andrew gets his answer when he arrives home after his shift. “I’m home,” he announces as he normally does, not expecting a response because no one ever gave enough of a fuck to give him one, even if they were home. He doesn’t get a response, but he is greeted with a scene so strange that it roots Andrew in place the moment that he opens the door. He finds himself staring, standing in the doorway as his brain struggles to comprehend just what the fuck he is witnessing.
His childhood best friend is sitting on the living room couch beside Ashley. His arm is thrown across the couch—so close to his sister’s shoulders that Andrew nearly drops all of the textbooks in his hands.
His friend is in his house.
Why?
And why the fuck is he with Ashley?
In which, Ashley befriends an old friend of Andrew's, and Andrew responds very normally.

“…but I will,” he confirmed, because he was a fucking idiot and he as much as he hated always giving into his sister’s whims, he also loved how happy she became when he gave her exactly what she wanted.

The problem is that Andy is just like her. He just didn’t want to admit it. He’s just as disengaged from the world, just as lonely and out of place, just as much of an outsider. He just understood the rules and the script that everyone else seemed to have and was determined to abide by them. He’d force himself into that box, even though he’s far too misshapen and large to fit. He jams himself in, cuts off the pieces that he can’t squeeze in, and masquerades as a square when he is anything but.
It's fucking insane to her.
He still thought that he could achieve a normal life, but Leyley had always known better. The two of them weren’t meant for any of that. Or maybe, Andrew was. He knew how to play the game well enough that he might just be able to fake it until he made it, but where did that leave poor, disliked Leyley? Leyley, who had no mother, no father (hah!), no friends, and no brother, once he fucked off to God’s nowhere to play pretend with people whom he didn’t even give a fuck about?
It left her all alone.
And she’d fucking die before she let that happen.

Ashley gestures towards the TV screen, with a wave of her hand, “I mean — all that. The moaning. The panting and all that squirming. Movies makes it seem like fucking yourself is the best thing ever but every time I’ve tried has been pretty lame. Nothing like that—,” she nods towards the female character who is currently having a massive orgasm, “—has ever happened.”
Andrew stares at her.

And then stares some more for good measure.
He’s pretty sure she just broke his brain, because he can’t really think of anything but the insane shit that had just come out of her mouth so casually. Is she totally socially inept? Didn’t she know she isn’t supposed to bring up how she masturbated to her fucking brother?
“That’s nice,” is what Andrew should say before swiftly changing the subject like a steering wheel being jerked abruptly to avoid a crash. He shouldn’t laugh or try to joke, as that might encourage her to continue. He should just turn the entire fucking movie off and go to bed, in fact.
“You’ve never come before?” He opts for the head-on collision instead.

Twelve hours and forty eight agonizing minutes had passed since Ashley left.
The end of the cigarette burns his fingers. He makes an effort to still his trembling hands so he can light up another one. He’d tried the summoning circle countless times, promising the Entity ten souls, twenty, the entire apartment complex, to no avail. The Entity was adamant about not welcoming Andrew back to his realm. When he got his hands on that stupid ball of eyes, he was going to punt it straight to hell.
Andrew wonders if the cricket, drowning and half-dead, ever misses the worm. He feels achingly empty without a parasite there to leech his nutrients, carve a home into his viscera, twist into his cavities.

He always came running back to her, especially concerned whenever she hurt herself. He would patch her up and kiss the band-aid while she blubbered fat crocodile tears. She drank in these scraps of his attention the same way a dog might eat barf off the floor. But those temporary moments of affection were growing farther and fewer in between, and she could only inflict so many injuries on herself—god knows the hag wouldn’t pay a hospital bill, not for her.
So she was thrilled to have discovered a foothold, another way to worm back into his good graces. Sure, maybe it went against convention to launch a seduction campaign on your own brother, but it’s not like she had a reputation to protect anyway. Andrew, on the other hand, very much did. He’s a coward who loves to hide behind her, always has been. Ashley knows he would never give himself permission to do anything unless she started it.

But no, 16-year-old Andrew Graves is two years her senior, and unbearably excited to finally welcome his little sister into high school.
