At the end of Robert's Rebellion, the first thing Eddard Stark did was make a deal with the Night's Watch to repopulate the Gift and raise new lords. Jon Snow, bastard of Winterfell, has lived his entire life learning how best to rule as a lord, anticipating the day he would leave to claim his new title and start his own house. Will he be the leader he needs to be, or will he fall short and fail the people he is meant to protect?
In "A Storm of Swords" Jon recalls a conversation between his father and Benjen regarding a deal Ned wishes to make with the Watch to repopulate the Gift with new lords.
