Cliopher did not have to submit a report upon his return from his vacation, of course — technically he had the entire six months of travel and holiday in the Vangavaye-ve itself off — but it felt wrong to be entirely idle for such a length of time, and besides, it kept him busy through the long weeks on the sea train. And occasionally there was a little incident here or there which he would need to inform the Offices of State about regardless, and it was simpler to send reports back through the Lights in one batch.

In which his Radiancy carefully reviews all of Cliopher's reports, including the ones generated on his trips across Zunidh. This is entirely professionally motivated and has nothing to do with what Cliopher considers appropriate footnotes.

There had been some argument, of course. Cliopher had overruled it.
In which Cliopher is surprised to find that his Radiancy has less respect for the protocols than for his Lord Chancellor's safety - or his own - and must travel through his lord's memories to rescue him from the ensuing curse.

They were waiting to greet him in the tower, his mother and grandmother and Leona, and even Uncle Kip—he was Uncle Kip here, undoubtedly, dressed in shabby linen tunic and sarong and looking thoroughly Islander, thoroughly relaxed. Gaudy felt a strange sense of vertigo, looking at him, with the layers of court robes heavy on his own shoulders and a sailor shouting in a Solaaran accent behind him. Then the moment stretched and snapped, and a wave of rightness washed over him. Home again.
Saya Kalikiri had had an odd twinkle in her eye when she granted him this sudden holiday, unasked for, and handed him a stack of dispatch cases taller than he was to work through on the trip out. He was to have a week's holiday in the Vangavaye-ve, and no work to do on the journey back, so he certainly couldn't complain. He saw that same twinkle now in the eyes of his family as they greeted him, and was confirmed in his suspicions that the trip was for more than a job well done.
