The first time Charles had seen Edwin’s tolerance for pain was within their first week of being friends.
Charles hadn’t figured out how to change his outfit yet, so after much reassurance that it wasn’t needed (Charles), and much insistence that it must not be comfortable to walk about in only a vest (Edwin), so he wore a slightly too broad blazer. Edwin soldiered on in his dress shirt and sweater vest, pretending as if his discomfort was not the most apparent thing between the two boys.

As it turns out, everyone else has; specifically about him, and that Camelot is supposed to have a crown prince.
When Merlin stumbles across him by chance, Arthur should be relieved. And he would be, really—if he hadn’t just been stabbed, and found out that Merlin has magic while he was at it. That Merlin does not remember who he is, either.
It all gets a lot more complicated from there on out as Arthur tries to keep his own secrets, deal with the revelations about Merlin, and find a way not only to restore Camelot's memories, but protect it against the threats gathering on the horizon, too.
When it rains, it pours; sometimes, the aftermath might just be worth it.

Summary
The thing about being possessed and having your memories stolen by a demon that you thought you were in love with, Crystal thought, was that it left you with some weird hangups.
So, she had trouble trusting guys now. Unsurprising, really. She’d read some articles about recovering after being in an abusive relationships, which is probably about as close to her situation as she’s likely to get.
The other thing— the losing her memories thing, the having her memories stolen thing— she wasn’t really expecting that to effect her as much as it has, once she got them back. But, lo and behold, here she is, in the office, having a mini crisis because she can’t remember what day her grandma’s birthday is.

Crystal has some issues around memory loss. Edwin can relate.

Edwin is so still and his face so blank, and Charles strolls over as if he isn’t suddenly nervous himself. Edwin doesn’t look up, so Charles kneels down to Edwin’s line of sight.
“All good, mate?”
Edwin looks right at him. There’s something cold behind his eyes. Charles wants suddenly and quite desperately to pull him into a hug tight enough to ward against the hurt there. He doesn’t, because the first time he’d casually put an arm over the boy’s shoulders he’d flinched – and Charles is never going to push where he’s not welcome.
“What does this mean ‘the First World War’?”
Or, Charles catches Edwin up on things he missed when he was in Hell. All in all, it's rather a lot.

Edwin jerked his head up so fast, Charles wondered that he didn’t brain himself against the stone wall. He looked more offended than he had when he found out about the live snake in Charles’ bag.
“What the hell kind of a question is that?” He hissed.
“I’m not saying we should do it!” Charles backpedaled. “I’m just curious! These cuffs make us proper solid, don’t they? We could probably lop it off and get me out.”
“No,” said Edwin emphatically. “We are not discussing this. I don’t want you getting any ideas and chewing your own arm off like a trapped weasel.”
“Not my whole arm, just my hand.”

It was hard keeping it a secret, but it's hard when everyone knows. Charles had seen his fathers blood in him his whole life. It was harder when it felt like everyone else could see it too. But, it was difficult to fight, in the end. It's the reason why a weapon fits in his hand the way a lantern fits in Edwins, the reason anger burns in him like hellfire.
In the end, he was his fathers son.
(The one where Charles talks about a lot. Life, death, music, parenthood. He learns a lot too. Learning how to be happy could be one of them. Learning to be loved is another. Edwin is a wonderful teacher.)
