In the depths of his mind, he tried to reach the ghost of laughter on a beach, but the tide continued to sweep it away with hysterical laughter and the violent collision of staffs.
“I’m not sure.”
“Do you want to be?”
His silence was heavy as he contemplated the question. A choice. It’s always been one, he knows. Still, his answer came out forlorn. Vacant.
“I don’t know.”

Summary
A guttural sound echoed through Flower Fruit Mountain. Macaque saw only half of the stranger approaching, but only heard his own mangled curses. Thick, hot blood dripped down his face, hanging at his chin, staining his fingers and clothes and heart. He blinked, and gods he couldn’t see and it hurt so much-
Everything after was a blur – in a literal sense. He couldn’t see anything.
He wondered if that was actually mercy in its own right, that way he didn’t have to see the gleaming, golden edge of Wukong’s staff as it plunged into him and the world finally, truly went dark.

Summary
In was only later, when the sun dipped into the waters deep, and the moon softened the kings shadow that Macaque emerged, quiet as the breeze. Wukong didn’t turn, just laying still as if resting, the only sign he was not being the uptick of his heart at Macaques presence. Macaque ignored his own hearts pace as he spoke for the first time in month, maybe years.
“They call me Macaque.”
That smile pulls, just a little, and Wukong responds with, “Well, they call me Sun Wukong.” Finally moving, Wukong turns to face him, a sigh in chest at seeing him there, really there. “But you could call me a friend?”
It’s a request, soft and gentle as it’s eased into him, and for the first time in his life, Macaque says, “I’d like to be friends, too.”
And thus, the world keeps spinning, the waves rise and fall, and Macaque keeps coming back.

Summary
They stay that way for a long time, Catra’s face tucked into Adora’s shoulder, Adora gently cradling Catra’s head. Adora is careful not to hug Catra too hard or make her feel restrained, anticipating the moment that Catra will start to pull away — but Catra doesn’t. She hangs on so tightly it hurts, her claws digging through Adora’s jacket and into her back, latching into her like she did when she was a kitten and didn’t know how much her claws could hurt. Adora tries not to wince, tries not to move a single muscle, worried that if she does the spell will break and Catra will struggle away, appalled at having shown weakness.
But Catra doesn’t let go. And so neither does Adora.

“Hey,” Catra said, and though Adora had rigidly fixed her eyes on the sky, she could hear the concern in Catra’s voice. She shifted closer, and put a hand on Adora’s shoulder.
“It’s okay, Catra,” said Adora. “I know I’m here now. It was a long time ago when we lived there.”
“Doesn’t stop me from having the nightmares, sometimes,” Catra said softly.
Adora looked over at Catra for a moment, who was gazing at her with such care that Adora felt that she was slowly unwrapping. She thought for a moment of the tense, resigned soldier she’d been, growing up, how she could never have imagined the languid openness she was beginning to feel now. Adora’s eyes flicked down, and then she looked back up at the stars.

Catra suddenly laughs, because what is she doing? She’s a closeted lesbian who hasn’t spoken to her family in years because of it, she’s struggling financially through grad school, she lives in a shitty apartment, and she’s just, essentially, offered to help a ghost figure out how to be a ghost.
But the hopeful look in Adora’s eyes is still there, and she’s wearing the first genuine smile Catra’s ever seen on her, and she’s almost blindsided by how beautiful Adora is.
So Catra nods and says, “yeah. I’ll help you figure it out,” because really, how hard can it be?
(Really, she has no idea what she’s getting herself into.)

It’s mutually beneficial, honestly. Their friends know the truth, and the only people they need to fake it around are Glimmer’s parents.
The only minor setback is that the owners of the vineyard they're booking just so happen to be Glimmer's college flame and the woman that Adora has been pining after for her entire life.
