Summary
Will is pretty sure he’s supposed to be dead right now.
Not in like, a depressing way or anything. It’s shocking, but even with all that he’s gone through, he’s actually doing alright mentally for once. His connection with Vecna has been silent for months, he’s been spending time with his family and friends, and he has a boyfriend. A boyfriend who he has a three month anniversary celebration with in less than a week, by the way. And don’t get Will wrong, he is extremely excited. How could he not be? He gets to date Mike, the boy who he’s been attached at the hip with since he was five. The only issue is, well, he can’t very much attend their anniversary movie night if he’s, you know, dead.
Will may be mistaken, but he’s pretty sure the demodog that was charging at him should have ripped his insides out about thirty seconds ago.

Summary
If there are three things someone should know about Mike Wheeler, they should be the following:
One. His best friend is Will Byers, who Mike met in kindergarten and is the most amazing person he knows. Mike would do absolutely anything for Will, and all of their friends know that Will is the favorite and gets special treatment, from always riding shotgun in Mike’s car to always taking Will’s side in any argument their friend group has.
Two. Mike is in the process of writing a novel, which he started halfway through freshman year of college and has continued writing throughout his college career. Now that he’s in his junior year, he’s wrapping up the final draft after holed up in his room all Summer to make as much progress as he could.
Three. Mike Wheeler hates chemistry.

Summary
“Heart,” he croaks as black dots begin to dance at the edges of his vision. He would explain to them, if he could, that he’s not in pain. That he is glad to be with them at the end, and he’s sorry he didn’t tell them sooner.
He really thought he’d get his happy ending.
A weight settles atop his abdomen with enough force for him to feel it. He opens his eyes briefly when his chin is tilted up; all he can see is Mike, his face collapsing in agony. Will’s thankful that the oxygen deprivation knocks him out before he has time to really dwell on how many regrets he has about him.
He’s still the only thing he thinks about as he says on his last exhale, “Heart.”
(or: a combination of basement gate & the theory that will would have a fake out death. a rewrite of the scenes pre- and post-vecna fight, but not the vecna fight itself)

“Wait,” Will said in a harsh, croaky voice. He felt like his brain was dribbling out of his ears and he fell onto the couch with a small poof of air as he stared at Mike in such a hard daze that it was a wonder he didn’t pass out again. “I - what do you - “
They stared at each other.
The air was thick and suddenly it was like Will could taste ozone at the back of his tongue, like electricity was coating his mouth and didn’t leave any room to breathe, to think, and his voice was wobbly, uncertain, as he said, “what do you mean… other boys?”

Mike, of course, reacts in a totally normal way.

“Meow,” and there’s no way she heard that right, eyes snapping away from where she’d been distractedly watching the TV screen and over to her brother’s friend. She checks again, and yeah, Will is holding a stuffed bear, not a cat. The beloved Tiggy stays firmly attached to his bag, so they aren’t playing with tigers, either.
“So they go back down the mountain, and now all the village people are asking them about the crystal, and Rory is sad thinking they didn’t get it that whole time, but then–”
“Meow. Meow,” Will declares, removing the teddy from the dinosaur’s back and making it do some sort of interpretive dance.

Or, Mike makes a new friend. Nancy learns how to speak cat.

“You do know what they say…” Mike shrugs, before locking his eyes with Will's hazel ones “Like father, like daughter.” he tells him, boldly.
Will's face goes bright pink at the statement.
God, how is he surviving this at all?OR
Mike and Will rescue a little kitten from the rain. It leads to a lot of wondering, hoping, bickering and falling in love.

“Knew he had it in him,” she says, curling her fingers in a half wave to Joyce. Joyce, who had been on Mike’s side at first, but now, apparently, is totally fine with the idea of her sixteen year old son dating a grown woman.
Mike can’t control the way his lip curls at that. “Right,” he says dryly. “I forgot how well you know him.”
Robin frowns at him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Mike scoffs. “Nothing. It’s just odd, how suddenly you’re, like, obsessed with him. Isn’t he a little young for you?”
Robin stares, and it feels a bit like she’s peeling back layers of his skin to stare down his insides. Like she knows. “You’re not Tammy Thompson,” she says quietly, like she doesn’t expect him to hear it. Her eyes widen, and Mike wonders if she meant to say that part out loud. She does that a lot. What does Will see in her?
Robin and Will are friends. Mike is definitely okay with this.
