Summary
The front door opened. The sound was unmistakable, the soft click of the lock, the scrape of it against the frame. Relief flooded Gabe so fast it almost hurt. “David–” he breathed, the word breaking apart halfway through.
Footsteps entered the room, but they were distinctly heavier than David’s, and slower. Gabe forced his eyes open. Harold stood in the doorway to the living room.
For a second, they just stared at each other.
Gabe tried to lift his head. It felt like it weighed too much for his neck. His body had started to shake in small, uncontrollable tremors, the kind that came from too much pain layered over too much dizziness. His heart was racing. His ears were ringing.
“Please,” he whispered.
He didn’t even know what he was asking for. Help. Water. A hand. Anything? Harold didn’t move. His hands slipped into his pockets instead. The gesture was so casual it felt ridiculous, almost like a joke.
“You know,” Harold said after a moment, his voice flat and almost conversational, “this is exactly why I told him he shouldn’t leave you here.”

Gabe doesn’t know what to do with this much sensation. He’s not good at containing things. Joy spikes feel like panic spikes. Excitement feels like fear if it goes high enough.
He tries to breathe normally. He very quickly fails. His chest tightens and his eyes sting. A tear slips out before he realizes what’s happening.
Then another.
David pulls back instantly, detaching himself from Gabe. “Oh my god.”

Summary
Natalie once asked David and Gabe if they’d both instantly evaporate if they were separated for more than a few hours.
It was more of an offhand observation than anything else, delivered in the middle of a FaceTime while she was doing something else, folding laundry, maybe, or pacing her room with the phone balanced on her arm as she was holding other things. The details weren’t anything to remember. The comment barely slowed the conversation. Gabe laughed, David made a noncommittal noise, and they moved on.
But the question lingered in his mind for a bit.

David swivels in his chair. “You want the short version or the one where I ruin him for you?”
“Ruin,” Gabe says immediately.

Summary
As someone who constantly dealt with chronic pain, Gabe had been warned about the danger of self-medicating from an extremely early age.
Especially with a mother who had what felt like every prescription drug imaginable scattered throughout the house, in bathroom cabinets, kitchen drawers, the bottom of her purse. He learned fast what wasn’t his. What you didn’t touch. What you absolutely did not experiment with, no matter how bad things got.
It wasn’t until he was thirteen that he learned there was more than one way to self-medicate.

welcome to my alive gabriel goodman au!
everything's pretty similar to the n2n canon (with the london cast in mind), except that gabe survives. diana and dan managed to find doctors that caught the obstruction in time to save gabe's life, but not quick enough to leave him entirely unscatched. gabe struggles with chronic illness symptoms daily, including extreme abdominal pain, low blood pressure, headaches and migraines, dizziness, shakiness, etc. which in turn leads to the canon of natalie being left out by her parents often.
natalie is born, not to replace gabe this time, and they're the best siblings. henry is still your lovable stoner. dan still struggles with ignoring gabe sometimes and dealing with his son. diana still struggles with bipolar.
this will mostly just be a bunch of oneshots surrounding the characters in this universe! hope you enjoy <3
