When Penelope was ten years old, she got a delivery at her house on Valentine's Day.
At first, her mother was delighted to receive the parcel from the delivery boy. She practically swooned when he placed the small box into her hands, and Penelope swore she heard a girlish giggle when Portia lifted the lid and saw what was inside.
But when her mother saw the note attached, her expression transformed from pleased to stony in less than a heartbeat. Her steps were measured as she walked over to where Penelope sat in the living room.
She thrust the package into Penelope's lap. "For you."
Penelope barely had time to take a breath before Portia whirled around and marched away. Penelope frowned after her mother, brows furrowed in concern and confusion. When she opened the box and saw the flower, she gasped. She rummaged around for the card her mother had carelessly dropped, her heart thudding so powerfully in her chest she was certain her sternum would crack, and pulled out the small slip of paper with slightly shaky hands.
