Summary
Once an idea was formed in Bertha's mind, little could she or anyone do to make it go away. So it was really unfortunate that her sister decided to make Bertha question her life's choices on her own birthday no less. She was Bertha O'Brien, handsome, clever and rich. Insanely rich. Her company's worth was around 740 million and it was the largest and most successful matchmaking business on the east coast, second in America. Most important of all, Gilded X gave her satisfaction like nothing else; she was yet to find something that could give her such a fulfilling sensation as a match well done.
Inspired by Jane Austen's Emma.

Summary
If Larry and Gladys did not wish for her help, if George no longer wanted her assistance, well, she wouldn't fight them. She had more than enough battles before her as it was, no need to add her family to their number if they were so pig-headed as to insist she leave them to their failures. After all, there was nothing in their previous arguments that said she couldn't provide her assistance elsewhere.

Summary
At 18, Bertha Kelly is hot-tempered, headstrong, and far too clever for her own good. One of twelve children, she's sick of her life as the daughter of Famine Irish immigrants in Kansas -- she wants more, and she's determined to get it.
A trip to visit wealthier relations in Cincinnati gives her a taste of the life she knows she was born to lead; and she swears then and there that she's never going back. When she meets arrogant, ambitious, infuriatingly handsome George Russell, she can't stand him. She also can't stop thinking about him.
Turns out the feeling is mutual.
***
Or, the George and Bertha origin story you know you want, featuring a rough-around-the-edges teenage Bertha; a dumb, cocky George who hasn't quite figured out how to charm women; and the big dreams (and big egos) that bring them together (and sometimes push them apart).Bookmarked by valley_beyond

Summary
What was the point of all this fighting, after all, if everyone is doomed to die and repeat things over and over again? Why did he fight, if with every victory, more defeats followed. Why did he fight, if it seemed like nothing changed? If he could do nothing to change; nothing different, the world still as broken and flawed and treacherous as when he was just a shepherd.
“So we can see them again, have a chance to change things.”
