Brendon takes weird delight in taking off-ramps and going on pointless side trips, even veering cross-country; eventually, though, he always finds his way back onto the highway. Mud clings tenaciously to the tread of their tires, and the gleaming metal bodywork is smudged and clouded into obscurity with choking red dust. There is dust in Ryan's eyes and every time he swallows, he can taste it thick on his tongue.

Everything is quiet except for the rattle of the air conditioner and what he realizes is his own heavy, open-mouthed breathing. He’d smoked with Jon after the show, and it’s making his limbs feel strange, his body overly sensitive to the feel of Ryan’s knees on either side of his hips.
Ryan is always beautiful, but the weed and her obvious bad mood made it a thousand times more enthralling. He’d seen her face plummet deliciously from boredom to annoyance to misery all night and even if she didn’t kiss him, didn’t touch him at all besides the very edges of their bodies, Brendon was just happy to watch her change channels.
