    “Everything good?” his sub asks, angling his neck to look up at him. He looks like he actually cares and Lan Wangji loathes it; his subs know little of him outside the bedroom. He usually doesn’t care to have the separated parts of his life bleed into one another, but for some reason he feels compelled to speak the words. However much he’s blurring the lines, giving voice to it will make it real.

    “My uncle is dead,” he replies flatly.

    The statement hangs in the air around them. Perhaps his sub thought he would say more, but there was little to follow it up with. He’d already cut ties with the man years ago and now he was little more than a stranger, dead and decaying.

    The sub looks saddened, and it annoys him. “We can end the session,” he offers. It is the wrong thing to say. He has not let his uncle interfere in his affairs for more than ten years, and he won’t allow something as insignificant as the man’s death change that.

    “No need.” He slaps him harder than before. Probably too hard, as it knocks his sub over the edge.

    He swallows his annoyance. Technically, that was his fault.

    This is a wonderful read! Shot me straight to the heart. The angst cuts deep and the tension between Lan Zhan and Wei Ying is so delicious. The bit of enemies to lovers had me hooked. I love the pace of the story. So well done. Also, I just have to add in that the story between their mothers is so beautiful. What they had was painfully special. Thank you for writing this!
