Henry scowls. “Sam is my priority and I'm not gonna put him at risk running into a fight I know I'm not gonna win. I map the way, you clear it. That was the deal.”
Joel scoffs, “The deal is that you leave us to die when shit goes south?”
“If I have to? Yes,” Henry says, unrepentant. “And you’d do the same, don’t act like you won’t.”
Joel just glares.
Henry’s not wrong, Ellie knows. All they are to one another is a group of strangers climbing the same ladder to survive. There's nothing stopping any of them from shoving someone off the rungs if it means they get higher. Ellie is hyper aware there is nothing binding Joel to her but his word to Marlene. He could dump her the second she stops being useful and Ellie would be on her own to get to Salt Lake.
Maybe that would be for the better. A group didn’t keep her any safer, they were just bodies she had to watch drop until she finally mustered up the strength to save herself. At least alone, Ellie wouldn’t have to watch any more people die in her place.
OR: Marlene gets Ellie out of Boston without Joel but they find each other in Kansas City anyway.
