    Summary

There are two people who saved Jack Wilder's life. One of them, long before they ever met in person, before they ever robbed a Parisian bank and an insurance mogul and framed a skeptic, is J. Daniel Atlas.

    The other is Parker.

    ...

Fifteen-year-old Jack Wilder (okay, fourteen-and-a-half, but that doesn't matter, right?) steals the wallet of the world's greatest thief and winds up with a new mentor and a set of lockpicks to show for it.

Twenty-two-year-old Parker has her wallet stolen when she's supposed to be casing the Met for her latest heist and winds up with a kid magician that could've been family, if she'd let him be, and that she can't quite make herself forget.

They end up in the same line of work.

“Do you know why I went to Paris?” she blurts out.

Jack blinks at her, and something in his expression softens. “You always liked the art.”

    Summary

He wants to be who the Eye thinks he is. He wants to be more than a magician. He wants to be great, and if Lionel Shrike set him on that path, then maybe he'll be able to do turn around and do the same for the next person in line. Sitting by the tree is a reminder of that, he supposes, a quiet monument to the finally-untarnished legacy of a man who made the world believe in something better. It's routine, and it's comforting, and Daniel's never been one for comfort, but the routine is the anchor he needs while he waits for their next show.

That anchor isn't necessarily supposed to involve a skinny, lanky preteen that talks quickly when he's nervous and calls him a dick within five minutes of meeting him and sticks out his tongue when Daniel calls him one right back, but he'd be lying if he said he wasn't used to the kid's presence now.

    ...

Three of the Horsemen encounter three children in New York in the year between Five Pointz and London, and end up bringing them home. Somehow, it feels like they're all right where they're supposed to be.

    Summary

He’s so tired. He feels heavy, as though every breath he takes drags on his lungs, barely any air reaching his lungs. The papers are blurry, and when he looks up, the rest of the room seems blurry, too.

He doesn’t know when his eyes closed, but when he blinks them open again, the screen glows brighter than before, and the papers seem further away than they’d been last time he’d stared at them.

He has to finish this. If he can just sort through the information, he’ll have a comprehensible list to present to Dylan, to make sure that he’s as far ahead as he can be — that prove that he’s as capable of running this as he needs to be. He can’t pull his weight if he can’t even organise some files, if he lets himself get distracted by stupid nothings—

    J. Daniel Atlas stays up late, has a talk and learns to delegate work. Or, something along those lines, he thinks.

    Summary

He loves the kids, and the Horsemen — he’s wanted them to come back for so long, despite the lingering bitterness that clouds every memory they’ve made, the searing ache of abandonment tainting every thought of his former teammates whenever he thinks of them for too long without the burn of alcohol on his tongue. He hadn’t known how to be alone when they’d left, and he’d spent so long trying to cope with the sudden isolation that he’d started seeking it out, as though to convince him that he’d wanted it in the first place — as though making it a choice could make it hurt less.

He’d have thought he’d be thrilled to suddenly have the team back, all of them — and with the addition of the kids, the team’s never seemed livelier, brighter and closer than before, the three of them bringing an enthusiasm to the team that they haven’t seen in over a decade— and yet, now that he’s here, it’s all entirely too overwhelming to keep track of.

A house of eight people is— a lot, really, if you spent a decade isolating yourself from the world in silence. There's too many noises, and too many things happening at once — and unfortunately, J. Daniel Atlas has never been very tactful.
