Summary
Lottie is freezing, can already feel the numbness in her fingertips and toes spreading to her hands, her feet. “Is this what being dead feels like?”
Natalie laughs, “Being dead doesn’t feel like anything, Lottie,” she says, “That’s the whole fucking point.”

Summary
Lottie's tongue on her mouth, swirling like childish blood on makeshift tea. Inside her, consuming her. Nat considered, for a moment, biting down on it, teeth sinking into Lottie for the first time and finishing her off for good.

Bookmarker's Notes
Lottie Matthews was many things in life but she had never once been beautiful. She was gore and bones, a crown of twigs and animal corpses. A throne of charred flesh.
She was the dust in Natalie's skin and the blood on her tea.
Perhaps Lottie had been beautiful once, with her soft pink sweaters and her tight plaid skirts and her pigtails flying in the wind as she ran through a beautiful green field. With her knobby knees and a big wild smile, dressed in yellow and blue.
But that had been millions of years ago and it didn't matter because Nat could barely remember that life anymore.
So, the point remained, Lottie had never been beautiful. It was too kind, too weak of a word to encompass all that Lottie was.

Bookmarker's Notes
When Lottie smiles at you, it feels like you’re an apple and she’s sinking her teeth into you, piercing your skin, carving a hollow in your flesh. Which shouldn’t be a nice feeling, but it is. It’s the feeling of someone saying: you have value, you have worth, you can nourish me and I want you to. Nat likes that feeling—craves it really—more than she cares to admit.
And ultimately, of course, that’s why it has to be Lottie. Because Natalie likes her. Because Lottie never gives her any shit about cutting class or drinking or doing whatever the fuck she wants with her own body. Because Lottie will buy Nat’s weed off of her without asking any nosey questions about what Nat needs the money for. Because Lottie lives in a house where most of the bathrooms are bigger than Natalie’s living room, but she doesn’t act like it.
It’s gotta be Lottie, because that’s the only way it hurts so much

Summary
The winter Beth and Hannah go missing was not all tragedy and horror. Just an hour or two before, there was love. There was a long yearned for act of passion that may have been soaked in tequila but was no less real, or important. Josh and Chris collide like touch-starved comets right before Josh loses everything he holds dear. Maybe even everything he loves.

Bookmarker's Notes
He tips his head in Josh’s direction. Josh’s gaze drags toward him, like it’s being pulled by a magnetic force. Their eyes meet, and there goes Chris’s heart again. It thumps in his chest, and he feels the reverberations in his throat, in his ears. He wants to take Josh’s hand and press it back to his chest. To make Josh feel the insistent beat beneath his palm. This thing wants you so bad. Can’t you hear it? It’s so fucking loud, I’ll never be able to hear anything else. I don’t wanna hear anything else.
