It was funny, in a dismal sort of way, that they had slept better when Aubrey was tormenting them. River had been alone in their own bed in Songshu for the past two weeks, and it had been terrible.
Their body kept half-expecting to be jumped on, and River would tense up, or their heart would start racing, or they’d have to throw the blankets off their throat so they’d stop feeling Aubrey’s hands.
And then they would be lying in their bed thinking of Aubrey, which would make them think of January, and then it would be morning and River would have been awake all night.

Summary
Two weeks after the Consular election, the Gales are invited to The Masquerade Ball. Celebrities, senators, musicians, artists - this is the hottest ticket of the year because the celebrity who hosts it has special permission to break one of the biggest filter laws for one night only: complete appearance changes are allowed, and anyone can be anything.
Disaster strikes when masked attackers infiltrate the party. In the crush of fleeing people, January gets separated from everyone except for a frightened child. Now January has to protect himself and a stray child from the masked attackers, figure out how to get out of the celebrity's massive mansion, and find his spouse.
All while in disguise.

Probably they were kidnapping Gale to try and make them change laws about how cages were made – or just ransom them for enough money to bribe other people.
Probably he’d just been brought along so that House Gale wouldn’t have either of its primary wildcard-political-players, and they’d be more likely to pay a bribe without any tricky plans.

The royal torturers could dredge all they could out of his brain before he died- and then he would die, bound in nullifying chains and all alone, and it would be a mercy.
That was his king’s wish, so it was Roman’s as well. He should have been content with that, should have been a loyal soldier, oathbound as he’d been since childhood- should already have put his captive in chains to take him back-
But he couldn’t stop thinking about how the torturers might crush his glasses, or bash in that scholarly face, or break all of those ink-stained fingers.
He couldn’t stop seeing the blue splashed across the clearing.
