"A groan comes from beside you, the bed shifting, and you’re afraid to look. Is this real? Will he be there? You close your eyes, afraid that when you open them again, you’ll be back in your hospital bed, forced back into the body riddled with disease, age and exhaustion.
But nothing changes. The sunlight continues to play across your young skin. The breeze stirs wisps of your hair.
You open your eyes to find him splayed out beside you, covers tossed to the side because he always got warmer than you did. Your boyfriend, your husband, the father of your children, and companion for the rest of his life. He died in your arms five years ago, a small wrinkled old man whose eyes sparkled with mischief and whose face crinkled with laughter in the same way it did all his eighty-one years.
