She does. She pulls the lid away and stares into the box, her eyes becoming glassy as she takes in the ring nestled within.
His mother had laid it on his desk over four years ago and told him not to screw it up.
He had screwed it up, of course, but he figured he had come a long way since then.
“It’s long overdue,” Ben tells her. “I wanted that ring on your finger years ago, but I wasn’t ready yet. I mean, I wanted you. I knew you were it for me, but I wasn’t ready to be who you needed back then. Not yet.” He watches as her lower lip quivers, her mouth caught between trying to hold in a sob or let loose a smile. “My mom told me not to screw things up with you, but I think maybe I needed to screw it up to be able to make it here.
“You’re my other half, Rey. You’re my purpose in life. My best friend. My love. Everyday you give me more of yourself, but I can’t help asking for something else.” He takes her hand in his, rubs his thumb along her naked ring finger. “Be with me. Be my wife.”
