Work Text:

Rory was gone.

Their daughter had left, back to the future. A future in which Chloe and Lucifer could no longer exist on the same plane. A future in which Chloe was dead and Lucifer had spent around fifty earth years once again in hell.

All of this combined and yet, she was not scared.

To be honest, this was just the icing on the cake. Chloe and Lucifer had spent the last six years together. As best friends. As partners. And as lovers. They had faced so much together whether it be the evil coworker back from the dead or an envious twin brother who wants to start a war. They faced it and they survived it. (Well, sort of on the latter part.)

But they were both still there. Both still standing together. And the force that would rip them all apart was not evil. Not evil at all. It was their own daughter. Their daughter who would be raised by one parent. Their daughter who would hold so much hate in her heart for a man she would not yet get to know.
Lucifer was shaking. She was shaking, both staring at the spot that their daughter had been standing at seconds prior. Or maybe it was minutes now. Time didn’t really matter anymore.

“She’s gone,” he whispered, voice overtaken with sorrow. Her hand reached out to find his, both wrapping tightly around each other.

“We’ll see her soon,” Chloe whispered, ever the reasonable one. And yet her voice cracked at the last word, betraying her as she broke down. Her empty hand trying to cradle her sobs as Lucifer cradled her, mindful of the hurt shoulder.

It was ironic really. Their first adventure together she was shot in the shoulder, their last adventure she was shot once again so close to the same spot. The last adventure she had never seen coming.

He swallowed, “I love you, Chloe,” he whispered into her ear, voice thick with emotion. And as she tried to say the words back her voice got clogged, mind telling her it would be the last time in a while they would say those words to each other. The three words she had once worked so hard to get him to say.

Her partner held her a little tighter, thinking the same. And was it sad, that she was almost envious of Lucifer? While he would be forced to Hell and never get to see their daughter grow up, she would be forced to watch it. To watch her grow, watch her learn and cry and laugh. She couldn’t imagine living without those moments, but she also couldn't imagine doing it without him. Watching her baby smile for the first time, a smile so familiar to her fathers. Brushing her daughter’s raven hair, also so familiar to her fathers. And the wings, God the wings.

Rory would grow up with an amazing sister and aunts and uncles. She would grow up surrounded by family and friends and she would grow up without a father.

So, she hugged Lucifer, the devil, her partner, and now a father, just a little tighter. Because she knew, it would be a while.
