Chapter Text
Dynamight had just come back to work from his “career-ending” injury. He had gotten caught under a building and his leg had been shattered beyond compare by a rusted metal pipe. He was trapped under there for over an hour, many people were worried he would be dead by the time they got to him. It was the scariest thing he had ever been a part of. He was awake the whole time, hearing them rubble shift above him, feeling the pain everytime someone accidentally shifted the pipe through his leg. He could barely breathe, he was sure he would pass out.
But Deku and Red Riot never gave up. Kirishima had gotten to him first, lifting the slab of concrete over him onto his own shoulders. Deku had slowly pulled him out, rusted pipe still stuck through his leg to keep him from bleeding out. Once he was pulled out and assessed, it was determined that the infection had spread to above his knee.
They rushed him to the hospital and his choices were limited. Attempt to use antibiotics to fight the infection and potentially lose his life, with the chances of it spreading to his bloodstream almost 100%. Or amputate his leg. End his dream, but save his life; or risk his life, but have a chance at saving his dream.
He fought with everything he could to save his leg, but there was nothing they could do. Antibiotics for 2 days almost killed him. He was rushed into surgery and, instead of saving part of his leg, they had to amputate the whole thing.
He was depressed for about a week, not even getting out of bed, before deciding ‘fuck that’. He threw himself into PT, paid a support company a large sum to make him a prosthetic, and worked back all the muscle he had lost.
He spent a month in the hospital before he was cleared to go home.
And then it was life as normal. Almost. His friends had chipped in to get him a service dog, so it was just him and the husky that followed him around. The dog was named Blaze, and he was concerned about Katsukis every move, watching everything he did like he was afraid Katsuki was going to break.
It would have been annoying if he wasn’t so goddamn cute.
But today was his first day back in the field. He pulled on his hero costume, one leg less, and locked up the apartment. He smiled to himself during the walk to the agency, excited to be back to his passion. He loved hero work. He would do it until his body literally shut down.
Which it almost had, he reminded himself.
He pushed open the door to the agency and slapped his hand on the secretaries desk.
“Good morning, Mr.Dynamight. Welcome back.” She said, handing him a folder. “Everything you’ve missed. You have a meeting with the commission later this week.”
“Not even a fucking week off before those assholes want to talk to me.” He rolled his eyes and flipped through the folder. “Thanks.” He nodded and headed up the stairs into his old office.
Wonder Duo Hero Agency was his baby. He founded it alongside Deku, a few years after they graduated. Deku had wanted to make a pun for the name, but he shot it down quickly.
Deku was also in the office today, and waved to him as he walked in.
The next few hours were boring, just paperwork mostly. Half about his injury and the other half actually about hero work. By the time he was able to go out on patrol, he was practically asleep from boredom. He usually was fine with it, but on his first day back, he couldn’t wait to get out there.
The first two hours were pretty uneventful. No villain attacks, no people needing saving. Just walking around and watching the cameras flash.
And then there was a scream and a crash. Black smoke billowed into the air a block away, and he took off. He was in the middle of meeting up with some fans. They had flocked around him, so he was stuck doing autographs for about 20 minutes.
“Move out of the fucking way, Extras!” He yelled.
He rocketed into the air as soon as he was far enough away from the crowd. He flew between the buildings, finding quickly the source of the problem. A couple of robbers, it looked like, had accidentally blown up a general store.
He cursed under his breath and landed quickly, launching himself into the fight.
All things considered, it was an easy mission. Two versus one, but neither of them had training. The fight was over quickly, with the police arriving only a few moments later. No damages outside of what was set off before he got there. His prosthetic had even held up after a few hits, so that was good news. It was the one thing they hadn’t tested yet.
The police handcuffed the two criminals and led them to cars, escorting them away. One approached him, angry.
“Jesus, Dynamight. You could have been more careful, you know?” He said, stopping a few feet away.
“Excuse me?”
“You destroyed the entire store. Honestly, I thought after the injury you would have mellowed a bit, but damn. That’s gonna cost your agency a fortune.”
“You bastard, the damn criminals blew it up. It was destroyed when I got here.” He crossed his arms.
“Yeah, right. The guy with a strength quirk and one with a taser quirk blew up a building. We’re not that stupid. Now, the law can look away for some things, big things, but you really couldn’t hold back, could you?”
“Listen up, asshole. I didn’t do shit. Hell, I didn’t even use my quirk.” He took a few steps forward, pointing a finger at the cop’s chest. “If you want to accuse me of shit like that, I would love to see you try to do my fucking job. See how much you’d like to judge then.”
“I’m just saying. First take down after your injury with this much damage. Not a good look.” The cop put his hands up in mock surrender. “Look, I’m just trying to be helpful. People talk and your ratings are not as good as they used to be.”
“If I wanted your goddamn help I would have asked.” He muttered, stepping closer once more. “So how about you keep your fucking mouth shut about things that you know absolutely nothing about.”
“I’m just telling you what everyone is too scared to say.” The man rolled his eyes and crossed his own arms. “But I’m not scared of you, Mr.Dynamight.”
“Maybe you should be.” His hands popped in anger, glaring at the man. He glanced behind him as he heard an odd noise, just to see the store explode again. He lunged at the officer, shoving him to the ground and covering him with his own body. The debris from the explosion rained across his back and legs, but he tried to protect the man as well as he could.
The man shoved him, hard, causing him to fall to the side. He was yelling something, but his hearing aids had malfunctioned and so he couldn’t really hear much. The officer landed a blow to his side before Katsuki realized what was happening.
He rolled over and pushed himself up, punching the man in the face, and then again in the head. He was knocked out cold. He stood and carried the man out of the blast radius, finding a crowd growing there. They all had phones out.
He dropped the officer onto the pavement, body falling limp on his side.
“Fucking run.” He shouted as he was tackled by the villain behind him.
