Don't Pick

Summary:

"Why did you let me do this one week before competition?" Win asked, looking at the reddish-pink skin and the clean black lines of ink that were being distorted under clear adhesive bandage on his arm.

He glared at the edge of the pool where Dean was looking at him, his arms resting on the ledge.

"Let you?" Dean asked, pushing wet hair out of his eyes and revealing his raised eyebrow of disbelief. "How did I let you do this?"

Notes:

I wasn't sure it was possible to love the friendships we saw in UWMA more, but Between Us has proven it's possible.

This one goes out to Blair, who's wonderful for the ego, provided half of the above "Early Adventures" wording, and who loves Dean-Win banter as much as I do. And thanks to celli for catching some rogue commas and quote marks.

Work Text:

"Why did you let me do this one week before competition?" Win asked, looking at the reddish-pink skin and the clean black lines of ink that were being distorted under clear adhesive bandage on his arm.

He glared at the edge of the pool where Dean was looking at him, his arms resting on the ledge.

"Let you?" Dean asked, pushing wet hair out of his eyes and revealing his raised eyebrow of disbelief. "How did I let you do this?"

Win pointed at his arm. "You didn't stop me."

Dean's other eyebrow joined its mate and it was a good thing his head was above water because he nearly choked as he laughed. "What should I have done – Tackled you? Tied you up? Called your mom?"

"Reminded me the competition is next week, not next month and I can't swim for the next two weeks." Win was absolutely not pouting, but the corners of his mouth felt heavier than usual.

Dean gave him a look that could have paved a road. "This isn't your first tattoo and I'm not your social secretary. And how was I supposed to stop you from getting a new tattoo when you already had it done by the time I knew your ‘I should get a new one’ meant ‘I'm going after class’?"

Win had been feeling the itch to get some new ink, especially after seeing some badass designs in a series he and Dean had been watching. He couldn't get disappearing ink tattoos, sure, but he could get some cool new designs. And how cool it would be if the tattoo he was thinking of could appear only in water? How hot it would look if he was standing on the podium as his competitors watched, the tattoo fading as his body cooled?

Dean had asked if Win wanted a new tattoo or just wanted to impress the swimmer at Warut Academy that they'd be competing against.

Correction: That Dean would be competing against while Win had to watch from the sidelines.

"Maybe I do need to hire you to do my calendar," Win said and then an idea came to him. He smirked. "Or maybe you wanted me out of the way so you have a chance with Sun in and out of the pool."

Dean looked at him as though Win had just suggested interdimensional travel was possible through the pool drain. Knowing Dean, Win's suggestion had probably never even crossed his mind.

"That Warut guy." Dean said, confirming Win's theory.

"Yes, that Warut guy. I know you've checked him out, don't try to deny it."

"Of course I have."

"But he's not your thing."

Dean shrugged. He looked somewhere behind Win's shoulder and for a moment he had an expression that Win recognized as his "lost look". Win sighed.

"I'm not sure if I envy or pity the guy you end up with. I hope he's got a good strength and cardio training schedule so he's ready for the force and weight of getting all of your attention. No one else has gotten it so far."

"Asshole," Dean said and rolled his eyes.

"Watch, he'll be small and cute and will knock you flat on your ass the first time you lock eyes with him." Win saw something that could have been a shy smile twitching at the corner of Dean's mouth and he was about to continue his teasing when the skin just above his tattoo started to itch. He lightly scratched. "Why did you let me do this again?"

"Because you usually tell me after you've done something and then we figure it out," Dean answered, pushing off the edge of the pool to swim another lap.
