Chapter Text

“Summons are not pets,” Tobirama said.

“I know, grandfather,” Kakashi replied. The boy was five now, that was old enough for a summons, Tobirama figured.

“Then tell me what they are, if you are so intelligent,” Tobirama said.

“Summons are companions that help shinobi if they are worthy of the help,” Kakashi replied. “They are to be treated as any other trusted comrade is treated.”

Tobirama nodded.

“This summoning scroll was my mother’s,” Tobirama said as he spread the scroll out on the floor. Tobirama could barely remember his mother’s wolf summons. The summoning scroll had been collecting dust since her death. The Senju brothers had their own summons by then. When Kakashi was born it was decided he would inherit the scroll. He was a Hatake, just as she was. Sakumo agreed. Glad to see something from the original head family survived when they did not.

Tobirama guided his grandson through the steps and was proud when he performed the jutsu on his first try.

When the smoke cleared, there was not a wolf sitting on the summoning scroll. There was a puppy. A pug, Tobirama was pretty sure.

“Grandfather. I don’t think that’s a wolf,” Kakashi said.

“No. It isn’t,” Tobirama said.

The puppy yipped.

“I like him,” Kakashi declared.

Tobirama let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. Most children would not be happy to be presented with a pug puppy when promised a wolf.
