When Gustave Daaé finds himself unable to make a payment on his enormous loan for the third month in a row, his daughter Christine is taken as collateral until the money is paid in full. Although his lender would normally send his personal assassin - known to his frightened debtors as the Phantom - to end Gustave's miserable life, he instead has the Phantom keep Christine prisoner.
