Summary
Warning: spoilers for Fire and Blood book, but also canon divergence.

Criston did not understand how all this could happen. By old rights and customs, the Gods should’ve been on their side. Queen Alicent bore King Viserys, Second of His Name, not one, not two, but three sons to take his place on the Iron Throne once his health grew too fragile to hold him in this world. However, King Viserys the Peaceful refused for decades to name a new heir in his oldest daughter Rhaenyra’s stead and started a civil war that plagued the entire Realm.
The heiress did not give up on her father’s delusion even after his death. The Princess Rhaenyra who he once served as a sworn protector and knightly shield refused to give up without a fight.
He thought he would serve her as a Queen too, once. Back then. For the years they spent together, Criston foolishly omitted to see how unfit the Princess was to sit on the Iron Throne.

TL;DR: The Blacks win the war, Criston's life was spared, Rhaenyra becomes the Queen and establishes her position of power.
