Queen Persephone sat in her pearl-white castle at the highest peak of the Underworld. Out of her window she could see the frozen lands, ruled by her husband, the Unseen King.
It was a land of terrible beauty. The bitter winds of endless winter roamed in these hidden halls, deep down below the Earth. They froze everything in their wake and created mesmerizing sculptures of ice and snow. Beautiful, yet deadly. No mortal could survive these winds for long. And no mortal was permitted to step a foot into these halls.
The caverns were lit by a myriad of lights that dotted the ceilings like a brilliant galaxy. They were glowing minerals, gems and ores of many colors. The richest treasure of the lands below; envied by mortals, Gods and Titans alike.
It was the home of the Wandering Souls, as lone and brittle as the land they inhabited. Ever enduring in death, yet the longer they existed here, the more they became cold and unroused by any stimulus.
Persephone sighed and blinked away the frost on her eyelashes. She missed the flowers of spring and the green bounty brought forth by her Mother Demeter. The rustling of leaves, the chirping of bugs and songs of birds from high up in the trees.
A tear ran down her cheek and as it fell, it froze into a light blue crystal that landed in the snow below the castle.
"Oh Mother, I miss you so..." sighed the Queen of the Underworld.
And from the crystal in the field of snow sprung forth a bright blue butterfly of dazzling beauty. It fluttered its wings, rose up into the sky and landed on the outstretched finger of the Queen of Souls.
"My daughter!" spoke the Butterfly. "Do not forget your purpose! You are of mine and I am yours, this frost could never hurt us. Our roots dig deep, crack earth and stone, our voice calls forth the summer. Remember this my daughter dear, these lands are yours to conquer."
When the last word was spoken, the butterfly died and its corpse fell down onto the window sill. The Queen watched it decay and leave behind a single flower seed.
The Queen knew what she had to do, she placed the seed into her hand. With determined steps she left the castle and walked out into the frozen fields.
Where her hands dug into the biting snow, it fled from her touch like a wounded beast. When her tears dripped down onto the frozen ground it cracked, and opened up for her. She placed the single flower seed and covered it with dirt.
When she closed her eyes and hummed her tune, the field erupted into a sea of green. From the snow peeked out a myriad of blossoms, with luscious leaves and bright golden glowing petals.
The wind of winter sighed in awe and the souls rose from their slumber. They roved through these Elysian Fields and laughed and danced in wonder.
