Work Text:
When Alexander Lightwood, an Omega man, met Magnus Bane, the most beautiful Alpha he had ever seen, he knew he was it for him. Omega men are rare and, for this very reason, cherished and greatly appreciated. Alexander is also exceptionally beautiful: tall, muscular, raven hair and hazel eyes, he isn’t a typical Omega, even more successful thanks to his unusually gorgeous look.
Alexander has never searched for casual relationships; he wanted Love, with the capital L. He has built for himself a respectable career as Human Resources Manager, being, as an Omega trait, very empathetic, good at reading people’s mood and character and treating them accordingly, very capable in managing possible controversies. A precious element in the big Company he is working for. Magnus Bane had been an unsatisfied customer, addressed to Mr. Lightwood to solve a dispute and the thing ended with Magnus asking Alexander out for a drink. Since Alec’s liking has always been only towards men, the rest was history and now they have been married for a few years, happy and in love like crazy.
One thing only is casting a shadow over their marriage: they have been trying to have children for a while with no success. It hadn’t been their priority, in the beginning, but lately they thought that having a family would have been a bout of further happiness, and Alexander stopped taking his suppressants…with no result so far and also no apparent cause. The doctors told them to not lose hope but, as time went by without success, they chose to give up sex schedules and abstruse time calculations which were taking all the joy and enthusiasm away during sex; also, Alec’s heats have always been rather irregular, so they were living in constant apprehension. Enough! Their love and their relationship are much more important than that.
After the last negative pregnancy test, they hugged, the decision already taken.
Alec sighed. “I’m sorry, babe,” he said, “but everything is becoming too much. I was thinking…”
Magnus kissed him softly. “What are you sorry for, darling? We still don’t know why we can’t conceive, and I absolutely agree with letting the tide flow. There are different ways to become parents, right?”
Alec nodded. “This is what I was thinking about. We could adopt, I’m sure that we could be judged as reliable fathers. I’d love to raise a child, and blood doesn’t mean anything.”
Magnus smiled. “Once more, I agree. Let’s take an appointment with the Social Services and let’s see how it goes.”

It took them an entire year and lots of documents, meetings with doctors and psychologists, unannounced visits at their home by social staff, but eventually the day has come and little Rafael has become part of their family. He was about five years old – they didn’t even know when he was born exactly – and he was a traumatized child, already rejected by a couple of foster families. He was scared, oppositive, he had nightmares, all in all the adoption came out to be tough and challenging. But Alec and Magnus didn’t surrender. They were good people and fell in love immediately with that boy, and with patience and care and love they slowly conquered his trust. Rafael understood that he would never be sent away like an unwanted package anymore and under their affection he slowly started to bloom into a happy child. The day when he first called them ‘daddy’ and ‘papa’ was the best day in the life of the three men.
This demanding parenthood, though, also meant having very little time for themselves, so their sexual interactions have been pretty rare and hurried, and Alec hasn’t taken note of his mild heats anymore. So, when one morning he wakes up feeling dizzy and nauseous, he immediately thinks about some food poisoning. The night before they tried a new restaurant after months of home dinners, and who knows, maybe he wasn’t accustomed to unusual food anymore. So, he calls himself sick at work and stays in bed for a few more hours, feeling better in a little while.
But morning sickness keeps on happening the day after and then again, until one Sunday morning, lazily lying in bed, Magnus asks Alec what he has been mulling for a while in his head.
“You’re still not okay, darling. A weird kind of not okay. Do you think that we should…um…try a…test?”
Alec sighs. “Yeah, I think so. I mean, the doctor says there’s nothing wrong with me after checking. But he didn’t talk of a pregnancy test, given our history.”
Magnus takes his hand. “Maybe adopting Rafa gave us an extra push? Yeah, I know, it’s bullshit… Are you afraid of being disappointed once more?”
Alec shakes his head. “No…it would be fine as well, but I’m…oh, let’s do it!” and fishes out a test from his nightstand drawer. Magnus smiles. “Ha, so you were ready to check!”
Alec returns Magnus’ smile and goes to the bathroom. After a few minutes he walks out, a strange look on his face, pale and looking emotional.
“And…?” Magnus asks anxiously. But his husband’s trembling hands are telling him everything.
“Love…” he whispers, “we’re gonna need a bigger house…”
Beaming, Magnus hugs him and kisses him senselessly. “And Rafa is going to be a big brother!” he adds, “Let’s go telling him the news and then…this needs a celebration!”
