Vesper Moonshadow, a fugitive bard with a bloody past and a talent for theft, seeks a new start in Waterdeep. Unfortunately, this does not pan out as planned. In a desperate attempt to fund his journey to Neverwinter to start afresh, he attempts one final theft.
His target: the legendary tower of Gale of Waterdeep, a wizard said to be crumbling under a mysterious affliction. It should have been an easy score.
But when Vesper is caught not stealing trinkets, but witnessing the archmage in a moment of raw, desperate solitude—a private struggle against an insatiable arcane hunger—he finds himself facing a terrifying yet lifechanging opportunity. After being thoroughly used by the reclusive and dangerous Gale Dekarios, the archmage offers him a new lease on life, by becoming the willing vessel and long-term "acquisition specialist" for his monstrous needs.
