    He sniffed, which sent even more spikes of pain through his battered chest. The door was chained, there was no way out. He valiantly shifted his weight and tried to cover his mom’s unconscious form. Maybe his…body…would protect her somehow. Not that she would care. The thought hurt more than the beating he had taken. No. Best not to go there. Instead, he turned his face toward the center of the room. Through slitted, bloodied eyes, Jason Todd watched as the timer ticked down to his death. He only had seconds now, and he wished more than anything that his dad was there to save him.
