Work Text:
Today is the day. After all these years, Hizashi is marrying Shouta. The theme of the wedding was compromise. To Hizashi, life is a performance and everything should reflect that. Shouta is more low key, preferring to keep to himself.
Nedzu offered UA for a location and both of them agreed. Hizashi was originally hoping for a more public wedding while Shouta hadn't wanted a ceremony at all. A semi-private location being offered for free can't be taken for granted.
Shouta had immediately given the responsibility of the set list to Hizashi. There wasn't a point to try to take that away from the radio DJ. Hizashi was still open to suggestions and asked for Shouta’s opinion on every single song.
They picked out the wedding bands together. Hizashi had wanted big, bright, fancy rings. Shouta asked if they could just use plastic ones. He didn't see the point in expensive jewelry as it would probably get lost while they're doing hero work. There's also the possibility of a jewelry related injury. Neither of them were fond of tattoo rings. It took weeks, but they finally decided on reasonably priced traditional bands.
Picking out colors for the wedding took even longer. Hizashi tried to include every color he liked. Shouta suggested “no color” as a joke, but changed his opinion to “green, like your eyes,” which caused Hizashi to blush. Shouta had shut down every suggestion Hizashi had. Red was too loud. Purple wasn't a summer color. Brown reminds him of dirt. Black was too depressing for a wedding. Yellow in large concentrations hurt his eyes. Eventually they had somehow came to an agreement on light blue.
The guest list was an easier compromise. Well liked family members were invited. The teachers would already be on campus, so their coworkers could come if they wanted to. Shouta supposed that he wouldn't care if students showed up, but didn't want to directly invite them. Hizashi had been banned from discussing the engagement and the wedding on his radio show as it could attract unwanted guests. Hizashi’s dream wedding included many more guests, not many short of arena audience, but he didn't mind compromising with Shouta.
Food options were tough to decide on. Since the wedding was being held at UA, Lunch Rush had offered to cater. Shouta had asked for applesauce, but not anything else. Applesauce would work for anyone, no matter their dietary obligations. Different varieties could be prepared for guests who were watching their sugar intake or those who weren't fond of common applesauce spices. Hizashi had to set up an actual menu with Lunch Rush. He had wanted a buffet with options from around the world, but that was a bit over zealous. Hizashi decides to just settle for Japanese and American options, including some applesauce for Shouta.
Shouta had quietly enlisted Yaoyorozu Momo to help decorate. She's a good student and her quirk could definitely cut down on costs. All Might volunteered to help decorate, but the skeletal man was only given very small tasks.
Seating arrangements were confusing to sort through. For the actual ceremony, it was hard to choose whose family would be on the left and whose would be on the right. Being a couple made of two grooms, there isn't really a tradition for them to follow. They end up flipping a coin and Hizashi’s family sits on the right. Anyone other than family who chooses to come can sit wherever they please. For the reception, they ask Cementoss if he can create tables. That way they wouldn't have to come up with seating arrangements before everyone RSVPs. It wouldn't be the most comfortable seating arrangements, but it's more efficient than renting too few or too many tables.
Shouta thought that bachelor parties were pointless. Hizashi thought that, if planned right, could be fun. Midnight took the liberty of planning their bachelor parties. The popularity of pro heroes continues to amaze the couple. Midnight had managed to find multiple dancers who show up dressed as pro heroes. It was actually quite frightening for Shouta. Seeing five copies of his fiancé enter their apartment and proceed to strip wasn't normal. He had thought he was having a fever dream. Hizashi had more of a traditional bachelor party, with the inclusion of the much harder to find Eraserhead themed dancers.
They picked out their suits separately. Following tradition, they didn't let each other see what they planned to wear. Hizashi picked out a light blue suit, matching the color of the wedding. Many could see it as obnoxious, but he knew Shouta would appreciate his outfit anyway. He hadn't yet seen what Shouta had picked out, but knowing his fiancé, Hizashi assumed that it was traditional and thrifty.
Here he was, waiting at the altar. His parents had brought him up aisle before returning to their seats. He just had to wait for Shouta. Hizashi was so close to the next chapter of his life. Within the next hour he would be a married man.
He remembers fondly the day Shouta had proposed to him. It was completely unexpected. The pair was seated in their apartment marathoning a cooking show. One of the contestants had mentioned being married and Shouta turned to him and asked “Do you want that?” Of course, Hizashi didn't have a clue what Shouta had meant until Shouta pulled out a beautiful engagement ring.
“I saw it and thought of you. I don't care if we're married or not, but if you want to, I do too,” Shouta had explained to him that day. Hizashi had to hold himself back from screaming. It was such a casual way of proposing. The fact that Shouta had even considered marrying him made his heart soar. He knew Shouta wasn't the type to care about marriage, but it still astounds him that Shouta is the type to care about him.
Hizashi remembered returning to work, wearing his engagement ring for the first time. His coworkers and students fawned over it and kept asking for details.
The same students and coworkers are sitting at his wedding right now, some of them giving him thumbs up and some of them tearing up. It was almost time.
Nedzu had volunteered to walk Shouta down the aisle. Hizashi assumes that means Nedzu will walk beside Shouta or sit on his shoulder.
The doors opened and Hizashi let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. Shouta appeared with Nedzu at his side. His suit was exactly what Hizashi expected, but Hizashi could have never expected just how beautiful his fiancé would look. Shouta’s hair was slicked back with a light blue flower behind his right ear. The suit was a standard cut traditional black suit that fit Shouta perfectly. Standing out on Shouta’s face was the fading scar from the USJ incident. Hizashi figured that the other wouldn't have wanted to cover it up. The best part of all was the genuine smile on Shouta’s face. His fiancé was positively glowing. Hizashi had to fight back the tears. He would have time to cry later.
Hizashi wanted the ceremony to fly by. He wanted to be married. He wanted to be with the love of his life. Shouta must have noticed his impatience as he touched Hizashi's hand calmingly.
Hizashi was shaking by the time it came for them to recite vows. They decided to write their own and wait for the wedding to share them. Hizashi hoped that what he had planned was good enough.
“Shouta Aizawa, I knew from the moment we met in high school that we would be the best of friends. Everyone always thinks that you're scary or dull, but I saw through that. I know that you're caring, smart, and overall amazing.”
Hizashi had to pause. He was having trouble talking through the tears that had started falling.
“I honestly can't remember when my feelings of friendship turned into romance, but I know that I'm lucky to have had you by my side through it all. I promise to have your back, no matter what! We've been a team for years and that will never change!”
Hizashi was an emotional mess. He was sobbing and shouting out declarations of love. Looking through the tears, Hizashi sees Shouta looking like he might cry as well. Crying was rare for Shouta considering his dry eye, so Hizashi knew how much Shouta appreciated his words.
“Hizashi Yamada, you have been the greatest influence on my life. At first, I saw you as an annoyance, but I soon came to realize that I had misjudged you. You are the most passionate person I know. I will support you as long as you are willing to do the same for me,” Shouta’s vows weren't nearly as wordy, but they held the same amount of power.
The tears won't stop. Hizashi needs to be married right now. The next few minutes are agonizing and Hizashi can't stop fidgeting. The pair exchange rings brought to them by Thirteen. Shouta smiles at him reassuringly. As soon as the couple was pronounced married, Hizashi kisses Shouta excitedly.
He's married to Shouta. Hizashi is jumping up and down, he has so much energy. They have to get ready for the reception.
They didn't have to change out of their suits and other staff members had already begun setting up, so really the only preparation was getting to the venue. Hizashi wastes no time at all running to the area reserved for the reception. Shouta is still holding his hand and Hizashi feels like a giddy kid. He knows his husband probably isn't nearly as excited, but they're acting as one at the moment.
Some of Hizashi’s coworkers from his radio show are setting up the music. Lunch rush had already begun organizing the meal options around the tables Cementoss had created. Hizashi and Shouta sit together while they wait for the other guests to arrive.
“Shouta, how do you feel now that we're married?” Hizashi asked, looking into his husband’s eyes.
“I feel the same. Nothing's changed,” Shouta’s words made something sink in Hizashi. Nothing's changed? What hasn't changed? “We're just the same as before. An official record doesn't mean anything to me. I love you Hizashi. Like you said, we’re a team.”
What a relief. Shouta wasn't the best with words, but he always ends up in the right place. Hizashi admires the way Shouta doesn't care about traditions or pleasantries. While Hizashi sees their marriage as a next step, Shouta sees it as a frivolous confirmation of what already is. He wishes he could experience the world in Shouta’s perspective, if only to understand his husband more.
The room had been filled. One of Hizashi’s coworkers is announcing the first dance. That's their cue.
Hizashi stands and Shouta follows, still attached at the hand. A song begins to play and it fills Hizashi with nostalgia.
It had been the last track on the first mix he had made for Shouta. It was a love song, but back then he had included it because he was trying to figure out what genres his friend was interested in. The song had slowly become their song and now it was playing for their first dance.
Hizashi just realized that they hadn't done a dance rehearsal for the wedding. It would be fine though. They both knew enough about dancing that they could manage a slow dance together. Putting his hand on Shouta’s waist, they began to move to the music.
Shouta’s eyes are the most beautiful things he's ever seen. They're dark and dry, but they're so full of love. Hizashi feels so blessed to be the reason why his husband’s eyes shine. He starts laughing as they spin together. It was just too good to be true. The laughing turns into crying and he thinks he hears Shouta laugh too. If the wedding videographer gets this, Shouta will never live it down.
They keep dancing until it's time for the toasts. All Might was the first one up on the stage.
“There is the old saying that you reap what you sow. Eraserhead and Present Mic have sown so much good into this world that it's just right for them to get some back. These two heroes have found that good in each other. I wish them the best in their marriage,” Yagi ended the speech by coughing up blood. Everyone expressed concern for the former symbol of peace, but he insisted that he's okay. Midnight then took her place on the stage.
“Shouta and Hizashi are good friends of mine. They're both gorgeous, strong, and fun to mess with. I hope they have the best sex of their lives tonight!” Kayama’s was followed by whistles and cheers. Hizashi blushed heavily. How could she say something like that with their students in the room? Nedzu began climbing up the stage. Hopefully he won't say anything embarrassing.
“Eraserhead and Present Mic are great teachers. They care a lot about academics and their students, even though most people can't tell. Watching them grow together has been a wonderful experience and I hope they continue to teach each other,” Nedzu’s speech got some laughs from the other teachers, but Hizashi felt like he might cry again. Their boss is so kind. Recovery Girl went up to the stage.
“These boys are a mess. I have been healing them for many years. They really are a perfect match though. More often than not they get hurt trying to protect each other. While there are exceptions to that, I know that these boys have cared for each other for a long time and I don't see that changing,” Recovery Girl’s toast was another for laughs.
The rest of the toasts went over well. Other teachers saying how Hizashi and Shouta were great for each other. Close family members expressing how happy they are that the two were finally getting married. Hizashi and Shouta were leaning on each other, listening to their happy guests.
It was time for Hizashi and Shouta to cut the cake. The cake was chocolate with traditional white icing. It was dusted with light blue edible glitter on the edges. The little groom figures on the top were replicas of their hero costumes. Yaoyorozu must have made them. It was such a beautiful cake, he almost didn't want to cut it.
The cake was served to the guests, Shouta and Hizashi choosing to share a plate. Shouta covered the slice of cake in fresh fruit. Grabbing a fork, Hizashi scooped some cake and a strawberry and fed it to his husband. They took turns feeding each other cake and fruit, ignoring the presence of their guests. Thankfully PDA was normal at weddings, so neither of them felt too embarrassed.
After cake, the pair went back to dancing. The setlist was perfect; every song had a specific meaning and memory attached. They slow danced the entire time, even through the faster songs. Hizashi supposes that it might have been better to do dance rehearsals, but all that really matters is that Shouta is here with him.
Guests come up and congratulate them as the reception ends. Volunteers begin cleaning up the venue. Hizashi feels a bit guilty, but he doesn't want to stop dancing with Shouta. There are still a few more songs on the setlist. They can help clean up after those songs.
Hizashi blocks out the guests. He looks into his husband’s eyes and all of the guilt disappears. Right here, right now, it's only them. The two of them, together as one. Hizashi starts crying again. He doesn't think he's ever been happier.
