The three Shardbearers pull their mounts to a halt a fair distance away.
Kaladin's not sure what to expect as the bridgemen approach the chasm; maybe the front row of men will pull out shields at the last minute to protect their crew as they run, or maybe the bridge has some contraption that provides cover under fire.
But none of that is the reality. There are no shields or contraptions, just barely clothed men that, as Kaladin and Tien watch in dawning horror, pass into range of the archers, and then begin to fall in twos, threes, fours, as arrows embed themselves into chests and heads and legs and stomachs.
