“Connie.” Connor’s lips were so pink, but the half-light out on the balcony darkened them; made them the colour they should’ve been, from all that smoking. God, Hudson wanted to kiss him so bad. “Please ask me for your very special birthday present. I will move heaven and earth. I will move the city of Beverly Hills and its entire population of purse dogs.”
“So committed.” Connor stroked at Hudson’s skin through the lace neckline of his cami. “I want you to make out with François. Just a little. As a treat, for me.”

François ran a wooden spoon around the saucepan and lowered the flame at the same time, hands moving with practised ease. “We’ve got tamarind rum and espresso martini affogato. What are you feeling?”
“You’re the boss, you tell me.”
“Tamarind’s pretty good.”
Hudson considered going for the affogato, just to be a shithead. “Tamarind sounds beautiful.”

“Oh my god. He’s a little old for me, OK. There.”
“Liar,” Connor said, smile widening. He looked so fond. “Oh, Huddy, you’re such a liar. You’ve literally come onto Jacob.”
“No, that’s not—that’s different. With Jacob it’s hot because Jacob’s my boss. The employer-employee relationship is the source of sexual excitement.”

“What’s your problem with me?”
There was that beautiful Quebecois temperament. Hudson loved to see it. Made him feel like he was on the mat again. Mouth-guard in, gloves on.
He eyed François and, feeling saucy, offered nothing.
“Okay,” François said, coming to a decision. “Why don’t I start us off. I find your court-jester act exhausting. I think if you drop it, you’ll find that people still like you.” He leaned slightly back after that, swaying, anticipating Hudson’s next punch.
“Oh, yeah?” That one hit close. Hudson felt himself smile. “What’s it like attending fashion shows as the plus one to your younger, hotter, more famous boyfriend?”
