Summary:
Historic AU.
Kirk and Spock as 1930s US Navy Commanders.This illustration was created as a commission for spaceisgay's fanfic What's Past Is Prologue.

Spaceisgay first had the idea of illustrating this work at the KiScon auction, where I was offering commissions. They wanted a 1930s-stylized portrait of Jim and Spock with Art Nouveau–style frames. Then I got the idea to have them interact through the frames—looking longingly (and lovingly 👀) at each other from their separate photographs xD
It was such a fun experience trying to replicate the feel of 1930s photography, with its overblown exposure and deep, dark shadows! So thank you so much to Spaceisgay for proposing this idea ❤️
Spaceisgay also graciously allowed me to “premiere” this artwork at the 2026 Winter Fandom Kombat, where it placed 6th out of 1,186 works—yay! 🎉
This piece ended up looking much more realistic than I originally expected, so I decided to include the creation GIF as well, just to avoid any suspicion that this is a paintover, photomanip, or AI-generated work.
