Fire at Monza: Tragedy Strikes 2026 Italian Grand Prix
Monza, Italy - The 2026 Italian Grand Prix was brought to an immediate red flag on Lap 37 following a catastrophic accident involving Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver Kimi Antonelli. The accident occurred where Antonelli, running in P2 lost control while attempting to close the gap to race leader, George Russell.
According to telemetry data, Antonelli's car clipped the kerb at high speed before spinning violently and breaching the barrier. The impact caused severe structural damage, leaving the vehicle partially crushed against the safety fencing. Moments later, the car immediately caught fire.
George Russell, who was also Antonelli's teammate, brought his car to a halt within seconds of the crash, exiting against team instructions. Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen, running P3 and directly behind Antonelli at the time of the incident, also stopped and rushed to the scene. [CONTINUE READING]
